Howdy Folks!

I was tinkering with JonWil’s RCT3 Importer for creating custom scenery and couldn’t resist putting together this rather whimsical little “Bubble Bath Coaster”. (‘whimsical’ is the polite way of saying ‘lame’ :) )

A tip o’ the hat to Tidus243, whose giant bathroom park no doubt provided some subconscious inspiration for this coaster, although I used terrain for the bathtub, not zillions of wall blocks. ;)

Just to prove that it does work without crashing, I threw together a little...

Yes, this is a pretty simple example of custom scenery objects, but hey, yah gotta start somewhere. Huge props to JonWil for his on-going work to decode RCT3’s OVL file format and create utilities for the rest of us to enjoy.

Hey

What I love is the coaster going INSIDE the bubbles, now if someone had the imagination and talen we could finally have the onride tunnels that many suspended coasters boast!

Now I have to clean up the keyboard... :)

That's a great idea Vodhin - a Ghostbusters park! Glad everyone is enjoying this weird little experiment. Mazeinies, it's not exactly an 'uploadable' thing at this point. You can find more info about the progress of JonWil's custom scenery importer in this thread (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=456249).

Can we get permission to show this on RCTV?

Excellent Klinn! That's an inspiring start for things to come.

One question: Did you have that scenery options variable (options.txt) turned on, in order for the object (bubbles) to be allowed to interesect with the coaster? If not, how'd you get those to appear as mini tunnels without object collission detection? Or does Jonwill's program allow for this? Thanks!

Very cool!

Hmmm, some walls and objects can intersect with coasters in the scenario editor, so maybe if you made the middle of such a wall transparent, then you could place it over a piece of track (or around one...) to create the illusion of a tunnel.

What I did find astonishing was the lighting effects on the tunnels at night as the coaster passed through them. I thought the lighting may be treated as if there was a simple block wall/original piece of scenery there. It appears that the lighting fully interacts with the new objects, bouncing happily off every vertex with delight :D

Pumper: I'm using JonWil's previous version of his Importer, the one that replaced existing scenery items rather than creating new ones. It appears that the game uses the collision box of the original item rather than looking at the actual geometery of the shape. (This is quite common in 3D games, it speeds up collision detection a huge amount if you're just testing against a simple invisible box rather than the actual detailed mesh)

In my case, I replaced a couple of the chess pieces with my two sizes of bubbles. So I can't place them any closer to the coaster than I could one of the original chess pieces. But since my shapes are a lot bigger, that means I could get them to overlap the coaster track (and each other).

If you saw that huge yellow dome I showed in JonWil's thread in the General Forum, as far as the game is concerned, that whole thing only has a collision detection box of a 1x1 square! (not sure about height) In theory I could have put another dome 1 square away so the two were overlapping. I'm not sure how JonWil's new version will be handling collision detection for brand new objects - if you'll specify it somewhere, or it's just ignored entirely. Whew - long answer, huh? :)

DarkSim: Glad you noticed the lighting, that's exactly why I left in a couple of nightime shots, to show how the game treats the new objects with point light sources. It isn't working quite right - the game's rendering engine seems be doing some strange things to attempt to round off sharp edges. You can see this under the regular daytime lighting too. There must be some flag(s) that can be set in the object's OVL file to specify how edges are rendered. BTW, that's why I've been concentrating on rounded objects - my boxy, sharp-edged ones aren't being displayed correctly yet.

I totally understand what you mean now - thanks for taking the time to post a detailed reply. I wonder if JonWill will keep it that way....

..even cooler would be if the grid collision detection was completely removed (sometime in the future). Sure, you can do that with track/scenery intersect command with that option cheat, but it's not really worth it, as you can only drop track through scenery - after the scenery is set which is painful. :)

Thanks for a cool demo video!
