View Full Version : Custom Scenery: Dark Ride [PHANTASM VIDEO]

After weeks involved with Jonwil's Scenery Importer, and quite a learning process along the way,
we are finally finished with the video. Phantasm is basically a sample of what can be done
with the Dark Ride Scenery Set, which is set for release later this week.

We'd once again, like to thank Jonwil for this amazing utility, as well as the RCT3 mod community
for keeping this topic alive with informative posts. Individual acknowledgments will be found in
the end credits.

Total Ride time is just over 3 minutes. The file size is larger
then planned (final size = 30MB) , but lower compression resulted in a undesirable results.
Screen shots will follow for those that won't be able to DL it.
Note: This is not based on the movie. :-)

Turn down the lights, raise the volume, and don't blink an eye...

Great stuff, looking forward to seeing this!

One quick question, just to make sure I understand this correctly, but you're not actually creating a 'dark ride', are you? That is, one that if it's daytime outside and you go inside the ride enclosure, the track and other items will be in shadow. I've shot videos of my 'dark rides' at night, just like your screen shots, as the work-around for the game's inherent limitations. If you've found a way to make a true dark ride, please share! :)

Keep up the good work!

JCat

Klinn -

It's dark inside -as opposed to the way we've been creating make-shift dark rides using the generic set (painted black). There is no change in the track, meaning you can still see where the track is leading up ahead, but whether your riding day or night, it remains dark inside (a la black surface). Basically you don't see where walls begin or end , like you do using the standard set. Objects will be lit automatically in the dark, which is actually the effect we were looking for. Plus some dark tunnels and walls will be used to conceal things.

Vodhin - definitely!

Remember the Mad Scientist Castle in the Bugs Bunny cartoon "Water Water Every Hare"- he had giant neon letters (very fashionable in the early fifties-modern era). I think it blinked sequencially "Evil Scientist" and "BOO". OoOo how I'd love that for a gag!

We thank you...!

CK the Fat: Just follow Klinn's Tutorial in the Scenery Editor Thread (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=460482) - believe me, once you do a few objects it all begins to make sense, and actually becomes incredibly easy! The hard part will be deciding what to build now that the possibilities are ridiculously cool!

2005
04-12-2005, 05:15 PM
like klinn, i don't see how you actually made the ride dark inside.

Making a 'black box' is easy enough, but i don't see exactly what you did to make the ride different. Well i'll d/l thisfor sure to see what you did :)

JCat
04-12-2005, 05:24 PM
2005 -

It's simply black texture inside - there are two buildings, one slightly smaller then the other, the outside is the blue tinted texture (what you are seeing in the screen shots), the inside is a black texture (since you can't share two textures on one object). The black texture gives the illusion of darkness, unlike the way it is now when you build with standard stock walls. The track information does not recognize that it is "indoors" so it is still lit, as are the objects - however, you want the objects to show up - that's the whole point; they stand out in the dark just nicely, and actualy vary through a few shades -- whether it's dark or light outside.

2005
04-12-2005, 05:30 PM
but track is still completly visible?

I already tried this and the track was completly light.

looks really good though :)

JCat
04-12-2005, 05:37 PM
As I said, the track is completely visible, but the rest is dark - - you do not see the surrounding walls that make up the strucutre - so you can easily hide things. It's a heck of a big difference from riding inside a structure with standard pieces, where you still see every little brick that makes up each wall. RCT3's stock walls are still lit, even though you close up the structure and set the game to night mode. Phantasm sort of simulates riding in pitch black, with the one exception being a lit track, which is still quite effective, when you see it in action. ;)

The cool thing is, you can add some of RCT3's standard walls, and they will remain lit, like if you want to have small moments of visible decor.

2005
04-12-2005, 06:21 PM
I suppose by adding internal custom walls you can block the rest of the track from view at one time (where the track curvers away)?

Yes, exactly - so in essence, you never quite see the entire layout -- just patches of it.

2005
04-13-2005, 12:30 PM
becasue the rides will go thorugh custom scenery, you could block the track as well by adding thin slices of walls over the track between track and camera on the trains.

This would only work with peep view ride cam, it probably wouldn't work with the nose camera.

A lot of work, but if you want the right effect.............

JCat
04-13-2005, 01:02 PM
We have a few dummy darkness walls, both horizontal and vertical, as well as tunnels of the same style. These will conceal certain sections of the track. The track visible is is actually quite interesting. At night, the front light is on in the car, which makes it all the more dramatic against the pitch black walls.

Great work Pumper & Marnetmar. Those floating eyeballs (?) look spooky enough out here - in a dark ride they will be even more intense.

The wall textures are very well done - the best we've seen on custom objects.  You folks are the Masters of Milkshape. And it's so nice to see arches/entranceways that peeps can actually travel through. Lack of collision detection has its advantages. :)

Guybrush_47

Thanks Bitter & everyone else. I'm pretty sure Pumper just used some of the lights from the game on those Bitter. The actual "lettering" was made with MilkShape, it has an option to make most any font into a model, pretty cool idea someone had to add that option.

JCat
04-19-2005, 11:11 PM
Thanks all -

Bitter Jewler - yep, as Marnetmar said, those are standard lights, but they're set in behind the wall (and were actually a temporary experiment). That Phantasm font was also changed to a better texture since that shot, as we figured more out along the way. Objects from the editor have no colission detection, which is how the lights kind of merged into the panel behind the lettering.
Cool Avatar, btw

aoshi67 - it will be a ride through video with added music/sound effects to beef up the atmosphere, followed by theme content to downloaded, once we rigorously test how it works going from computer to computer. A completely black wall set will be included to "darken" indoor rooms, tunnels etc..

JCat
04-20-2005, 05:30 PM
LOL - it is a great idea, but hopefully someone else (Bitter?) will tackle that -- we already have plenty of objects, and the editor can be quite intolerant at times, spitting your work back at you. With this in mind, 26 rendered letters is a long process! I think who ever releases it should dedicate the entire theme to just that. The current logo was rendered as one word.

You have completely overcome the inherent restrictions of the RCT3 rendering engine to create a truly unique ride. ("...can't sleep... clown'll eat me... can't sleep...") :)

I loved the shots of the peeps covering their eyes and shivering.

That was awesome. Loved the giant spider... and the art gallery was brilliant. Incredible work, guys! There was only one minor thing that I didn't like (and I seem to always find at least one bit of constructive criticism)... I didn't like seeing the other cars 'behind' us --- just kinda had a little mood killer in that one huge dark room to see the next car coming around the corner. Completely minor, I know, and I was over it quickly.

Incredible ride! This is an absolute 'must-download', guys!

JCat
05-02-2005, 01:33 PM
Thank you everyone!

Everything that wasn't recognized as standard RCT3 Scenery during the ride was part of the dark ride set, including the spiders; nothing was added in as a special effect during the video process (except for the end credit skull picture) :-) . The clown was a a black wall with a clown face texture submitted by Marnetmar- which blended in well with my standard black walls that made up a good 70% of the ride; The large structure was also black inside which helped. The hall of portraits was a wall I took and expanded 3 times the size wide. It's an odd one, because if you move it "in" the grid, the portraits appear, and if you move it out - it's simply a red texture (an accidental dual purpose object I guess). LOL

ytivarg: Yes, I know what you mean - during early shooting, I saw the other car coming out of the room and wondered if I should just do a single car production, then later, decided to leave it as is. But I can see how it would get in the way of that "alone in the dark" feeling. :D

Thank you again. We're now working on getting the double set out. I can't wait to see what people come up with!

Continued thanks to all who took 3 minutes of their life to get a bit frightened. :alien:

Shyguy: We're "aiming" for a Friday night release. Some models had to be redone so everyone can get more use out of them. For instance, my glass vertical tunnel (during lift) was originally long (like 3 straight track segments) and was created that way for Phantasm, but instead, I've remodeled it so it's closer to a tile size, length wise, and I've now added a horizontal version as well. Marnetmar is also doing similar with some of his objects. Then we need to create the icons which is going to be a tedious affair.

Thanks again

I doubt it 2005, I think this one came out exactly as it was intended.

When will the download be up and what's wrong with the objects right now before they can be released? :)

A few objects are being resized to something more standardized as opposed to the original custom size that was used for Phantasm. As an example, the eerie vertical glass tunnel you climb at the beginning of the ride, was one long object, but I have since resized it (and made a horizontal version not found in the ride). A smaller segment is more versatile, as one can make it as large as they need. In addition, icons have to be finished - which was just started, followed by final testing.

Here's a few pics from the prop testing. No animals or peeps were hurt during the production. Well maybe the Park Inspector, but he doesn't count, does he? ;) :D

Holy Pac-man! That was insane! Now thats a true dark ride, half the time it was pitch black! I reeeealy liked the clowns. They scared the freak out of me. And I really wasn't expecting that one picture at the very end of the rideafter it returned to the station. That made me jump out of my seat. *****/*****

My honest opionion:
It wasnt what I expected but it was still good. There were some good elements but some were just not. But i do admit the face popping up did scare me. The video was ok. Ok it was great but i think a little tweaking could of set this over the top.

I was hoping people would notice that and not turn off the video immediately. LOL - a lot of movie trailers do this sort of thing at the very end. Reminds me of that Internet joke that went around, where you have to stare into some scene to spot the flaw, then some horrid face pops out accompanied by a loud noise.

How did you make those letters Phantomas (SP)! How did you have those sound thingies!

JCat
06-08-2005, 05:43 PM
I created those letters with a modeling program, the same way all the rest of the scenery was created, however, those letters are not part of the dark ride set, since they only spell out "Phantasm" exclusively for this ride.

The sound is not part of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 - those are standard MP3/WAV sound effects edited in for the video using a video editing program, such as Vegas or Microsoft Movie Maker.

Caffinated has a nice full letter set you can download (it's another scenery pack) so you can make your own names, signs, etc..

You can get his letter pack HERE (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=473247)

Yeah I've seen it on youtube I gave it 5*

It made me jump loads.

But I still need help on importing the scenery on the game as the pictures on the instructions don't show up for me.

Could anyone talk me through it?

I'm confused! :( :( :( :( :( :(
