Whew, it's over - after numerous weeks working with the object editor, 3D modeling, texture selecting, file transfers, text files, video editing, and trying to find time to do real life work and eat in between, Marnetmar and I, finally present, the Dark Ride Set.

As the editor evolves, we will update this collection to include improvement of standard object behavior.

Version 1.0 Notes (tested on North American Version w/Patch 2):
Wall/Roof objects will stack nicely, however, they will not automatically "jump" to the next valid location. Just use your Shift Key and and they will line up easily (you will still see the object jump in even increments).

The Global Delete function is not implemented. You'll have to use the single trashcan (or right click) to delete each object.

No Collision Detection. That's correct, and it's a good thing however, we wouldn't recommend placing a wall on a path, unless you want your peeps to magically walk through solid objects. :bulb:

The Onyx set "may" appear a different color (on occasion), this is an unknown issue right now, but it usually corrects itself after a few moments.

IMPORTANT:
The Dark Ride set was thoroughly tested between a number of computers. Although we don't foresee any problems, it's best to back up any saved coasters, parks etc. If you feel any of this scenery is causing havoc with your game, you can easily remove both sets by going in to your Program Files/Rollercoaster Tycoon 3/Styles/Themed/ folder, and look for the two Dark Ride folders to delete. Remember, if you download these sets, you are accepting full responsibility, as these add-ons are not supported by Frontier or Atari.

Let's get Scared!

----
Terrifying Tips:

~ The Pitch Black walls/roofs as well as the Black Vertical and Horizontal Tunnels are great for creating dark rooms as well as hiding props.

~ Use any of the standard RCT3 building scenery or our castle and stone sets for the external foundation of your ride, and use all the black styles for the inside.

~ Remember, although it appears dark inside, it's not "true" darkness, meaning, you will see your coaster track, but with black walls and tunnels, you can block a most of 'what's ahead'.

~ You can use the supplied roof titles and shift them just slightly above ground to cover existing paths. Peeps will still think they're on the real path, but now you have even more variety to dress up your walk-ways.

~ Day or night - it will be pretty dark inside, however, nighttime works best if you want to add lights near props for some momentary bright "chills'.

~ The black panel props (Klowns, Indian, etc.) work best against black environments. Objects, or non-black walls that are directly behind your panel will reveal the black border - you want that hidden!

~ Although we've developed this around a dark ride theme, there's no law saying a a good deal of these items won't be useful outside! :-)
---

Acknowledgments:
Frontier, for taking the best sim/coaster game on the planet to an unimaginable level (we still want an "official" dark ride expansion), and Atari for putting it into our hands.

We would like to thank Jonwil for making all this a reality with his Scenery Importer, which took us all by surprise, earlier then expected.

A big thanks also to Klinn, for providing the RCT3 mod community with essential information, as well as the latest additions to Jonwil's importer, oh...and that last minute test! ;-)

And finally, everyone in the custom scenery topic thread for sharing their ideas, tips and progress!

Check out the PHANTASM VIDEO (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=462758) for an example of what can be accomplished with this new scenery set.

Pumper, Marnetmar...really really thanks. It's ajoy to see how your best game expands over the immagination, and I think this is only the beginning! But now that the custom expansions are over...what would we dream for??? Maybe you or another one start a thread where all can post their ideas...maybe, but now I'll go play with it! You're the best, I'll never forget these names....Pumper, Marnetmar, Klinn, Jonwill.....now with black walls I can start a project....Thanks!!!!

mazeinies - you're not using the North American version I'm assuming, correct? If so, did you download the install instruction manual? There's a section which tells you where to 'direct' the installation if you are not using the US release. Also, if RCT3 is installed on a different drive letter (other then C), you need to make sure that you put that letter in (on the self extract program).

We're glad to hear people are enjoying this so far & are looking forward to seeing some of the cool Dark Rides people come up with in the future ;)

mazeinies-the exe is set to extract the files to:

C:/Program Files/Rollercoaster Tycoon 3/Styles/Themed/

If this is the way your directory is set up, everything should be in the right place. If it's worded differently or on another drive, you'll have to select the correct path to extract it into your game so it will work for you.

Klinn
05-07-2005, 05:26 PM
Woo-hoo! More toys to enjoy!!! :D

This is an amazing collection of pieces to experiment with. And not just for other dark rides, there's all sorts of goodies in here (like the stone and castle walls, roofs and arch) that will be useful in all kinds of situations.

That small spider is going to be fun to play with - it's perfect for placing on walls just above riders' heads.

Great job on the scenery pack, you two. I'm glad you stuck it out, despite some of the puzzles and battles you had to go through while exploring these uncharted waters.

(Edit: I should also mention that these are the best-textured custom items I've seen. I gotta buckle down and figure out how to do that nice a job. More 's )

mazeinies - Have you tried to open a new sandbox & looked to see if the Dark Ride objects are there?

Maybe this will help you also:

Griffman, could please do me a favour and open your park in the Scenario Editor? Then see if the pieces are available there. I think the other way, the game does not consider them 'invented' yet, so they don't appear. Not sure why the rest disappeared through, that's odd. :(

We're all learning this custom object business together, so please bear with me as we try to sort out the problems.

Edit: Here's a better explanation of what to do that I just tested on one of my old parks:
- Open the park in the Scenario Editor
- Click the 'Set Up Inventions' button
- Select all the ElectroShock Set items in the center column
- Click the green button under the right column to move them there.
- Save the fixed park

This moves them from the "Items to be invented" column to the "Items available from start of game" list, so you won't have to wait for them to be invented.

This process is only needed for old parks. Any new sandbox parks will have them automatically, and if you're creating a new custom scenario you can choose which column to put the parts in just as you would for the regular RCT3 scenery items.

You guys and Klinn inspire me to start my City collection. Right now I'm learning how to use Anim8tor; progress is going fairly quickly. I bet the hard part's the converting to RCT3 files.

JCat
05-09-2005, 05:19 PM
Great CK! One you import a few models, it will become second nature, plus there's more documents on the process then there were weeks back while many of us were still learning. Don't get discouraged by first results. Early on, many of us had to redo our models because of sizing issues, or texture problems - then there's that random nightmare when the object just doesn't work and you get an error message (and you have to restart RCT3 again). Once you get some basic modeling skills going, you're already 3/4 of the way there!

In your old sandbox parks, take them to Scenario Editor and add the new items to the "already invented" column.
New parks in Sandbox already "see them" where your older parks don't.

Thanks RCTMaNiAc255

@DisneyFREAK1178 - hmm...there is no winrar archive. Should be a zip file for each download (Marn and Mine). Afer both files are unzipped they each have their own Install Program which you click, and then it will prompt you to install to the directory (which you have above). You continue (assuming the game is on your C drive -- if it's on another hard drive letter, just change the letter), and it should install the files correctly. In game, you should see new icons in your walls/roofs directory, as well as in the scenery objects (and a new tree with your trees).

Ok, Try this Twister, when you first double click on the exe, you'll see the window open that has the location to extract the files to C:/Program Files/Atari/Rollercoaster Tycoon 3/Style/Themes, instead of just extracting them there, click on the "Browse" button & select your desktop to extract them to & see if they extract there. If they do, just copy/paste them into the correct folder in your game & see if they show up for you then.

By default the folder is located on C:/Program Files/Atari/Rollercoaster Tycoon 3/Style/Themed

If you chose a custom location when installing Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 then you will need to look in the folder where you installed the game. I installed mine on D:/Program Files/Atari/rct3/Style/Themed for example.

If you don't know where you installed the program but it shows up on your start menu try holding the mouse over the RCT3 icon and it should give you the path to the folder. If you have the game installed you should have an atari folder under Program Files and that is where you should find the RCT folders.

It could also be located in E:/ or F:/ by default. On the computer I installed RCT on it automatically installed it in E:/. It's also come to be known that some computers install it on F:/.

Impossible and incorrect. The files are totally clean, and they were redownloaded to make sure of this -- you're not dealing with two newbies here -- we've been doing mods for a few years, and know the drill.

Let's see, you got the Dark Ride scenery over 2 weeks ago & used it.

Now suddenly today you say you have a trojan virus & you're trying to blame it on the custom scenery?

I think you need to watch your web surfing habits Plokoon11, the Dark Ride sets DO NOT contain any type of virus whatsoever.

I don't appreciate you saying you got it from something that Pumper & I created when the fact is, you have no idea where you got this virus from.

I would suggest in the future that you get your facts straight before making accusations about things of this nature.

Ok, go into the game folders to wherever you extracted them & then you'll need to right click on the icons (they should have a black & orange icon with MTTM on it) & choose "cut" then go to your desktop & right click on any open area & choose "paste". That will put the exe files on your desktop. Once you have them on your desktop, just double click on the icon & it'll self extract the files right into your game for you.

First off,

You're still unclear about what you did to extract them, no worries :) that's why you read this.

What you need to do, is extract the original zip file. You will now have an exe file. Double clicking that opens up a nice little installer/extracter for the real scenery files.

It will have a path placed in it, if this is the correct RCT3 install location, simply click unzip. If it is not, you'll have to edit it by hand, or browse with the button provided.

After that's done (or if that's what you did :))

You need to either open a new sandbox or open the scenario editor to see the new pieces, they will not be available in current parks unless you edit them in the editor and add them through the inventions (erm...at least I think that's true to add them...to be honest I haven't tested that so I don't really know).

They should be there under the walls/roofs/etc and will be under the Spooky section. (There is also a small selection in Scenery Items/Spooky).

If this still doesn't work, I don't know ><.

When taking screenshots recently, I was bothered again by the way RCT3 walls & roofs do not cast shadows, so the interior walls are just as bright as the exterior ones. I understand why, from a FPS point of view, they have to do this, but it takes away any sense of Ďdepthí when looking through a doorway. In fact, sometimes itís not clear if thereís an opening at all.

Anyway, I decided to try using some of Marnetmar & Pumperís dark walls to make better looking screenshots.

Hereís the ordinary RCT3 screenshot:
http://www.designamatic.com/Graphics/RCT3-Framework20.jpg

Then I added some black walls inside:
http://www.designamatic.com/Graphics/RCT3-Framework21.jpg

To me, that looks a lot better. Encouraged by this, I tried another experiment.
Hereís the usual RCT3 screenshot:
http://www.designamatic.com/Graphics/RCT3-Framework22.jpg

Then I added some of the black translucent walls. They make it darker inside, but you can still see the texture of the walls.
http://www.designamatic.com/Graphics/RCT3-Framework23.jpg

The black translucent wall is positioned just in front of the regular one. I think Iíll be planning all my structures in the future to take advantage of this.

Thanks again for the cool custom scenery, MNM & JCAT.

Did you use the smoked glass wall (as snowjones mentions) or the pure black walls? I've been toyingwith the smoked glass walls for the next addition to Wonder World and they work great for the effect you're going for.

In the first set of pics he used the black walls & the second set has the smoked glass wall pieces. These do look great in the game & depending on what you want to do, you can have it "shaded" or very dark.

Ya know... seeing what Klinn has done, I wonder if Frontier could make the textures on the 'in-side' of their walls darker to give the same effect...

Nice find, Klinn....

Klinn

Good idea, Vodhin. That would be a cheap way (in terms of frame rates) to provide some darker-looking interiors. The only snag - I also use the walls for interior partitions within a building. I wouldn't want one side dark and the other light, so maybe Frontier would have to make two sets of walls - one for the exterior face of a structure (one side dark) and one for any interior partitions (both sides dark).

Hmmm, I may try this approach if I make some more building sets. I'll call it the "Vodhin Signature Series" :D

Go for it Klinn ;) I was thinking of using the in-game textures for the spooky house walls & making the inside black, but I already have too many things going on to do it.

Is the game installed on your "C" drive Chinchilla? If so, all you have to do is double click on the exe & it'll install it right into the Style/Themed folder for use.

AngryChinchilla
11-26-2005, 10:13 PM
It is on my C drive and I can't find a .exe file. All of the files are OVL

marnetmar
11-26-2005, 10:15 PM
When you downloaded the files, did you get a zip with the .exe file in it to install the theme into your game?

AngryChinchilla
11-26-2005, 10:21 PM
The icon on my desktop is a zip file but when i open it there is a folder that says Pumper-darkrideset. when i click that, there is another folder that says Pumper-Darkridecollection. There is also a style.common.ovl and a style.unique.ovl. If i open the Pumper-Darkridecollection folder, there are 32 OVL files that say the names of the various scenery items.

marnetmar
11-26-2005, 10:27 PM
It sounds like you got the regular zip to install it yourself. The folder in the zip named Pumper-DarkRideSet & it's contents needs to be in the Themed folder. You might try deleting the one in your game & then extract the other either into the Themed folder, or to your desktop & then copy/paste it into the Themed folder & see if that fixes it.

AngryChinchilla
11-26-2005, 10:32 PM
what about the style.common.ovl and the style.unique.ovl. What do i do with them?

EDIT: tried that, didnt work. It didn't show up in my game.

marnetmar
11-26-2005, 10:42 PM
In the pic below the red circled area is the folder that needs to be in the Themed folder, the rest of the pic shows what's inside of that folder. The folder in the big part of the pic contains the ovl files for each prop.

You should use the exe version file. If you installed RCT3 the way Atari originally recommends, than the game should install properly, likewise use Pumper/Jcat's exe file and it should be just fine. Make sure to remove the old software install before you do this...

Good luck.

There's a couple of stickies at the top of the page that outline all the steps needed to check to see if the set is installed correctly. The error messages you got almost always refers to incorrect installation...even a simple thing can cause it. Just follow the step-by-step directions and it should work.

Well here's what I do. I download his set to the styles themed folder and it seems to go good. I unzip it, but in his instructions he says there is an exe file that will automatically unzip the items into the correct places. However even after searching for the exe like you suggested I can't find it. Once i can find the exe I can handle it.

If it was the regular zip, just extract the contents of the zip to: C/Program Files/Atari/RollerCoaster Tycoon 3/Style/Themed & it should work fine for you.

You need a program like Powerarchiver (http://www.powerarchiver.com/download/) or WinZip (www.winzip.com) to extract the files from the zip. Once you have one of these programs installed, when you right click on the zip, it'll give you the option to extract the files wherever you want them.

I've never been able to use self installing exe files cause for some reason, my Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 folder doesn't have the little (r) thing on the end so I just manually install everything. i never added the (r) thing to the end cause i was afraid that it would screw up the game. could I add it to the folder to solve my problem, or should I leave it be???

Anyways, This set is very pratical for a lot of different things. I just love using your dark walls for everything from making pitch black rides, to just hiding unwanted areas in the game such as under bridges, or doorways that are just meant to be scenery.

Does anyone know of an exe file download of the dark ride set?

Try the page linked below, I'm pretty sure both mine & JCat's sets are in a self installing exe in the zips.

http://www.trackworx.com/DarkRideSet.html

There's also a Read Me file you can download to help with the installation.

I can't get any of the files to even open on my other computer :(. I downloaded them onto my portable USB Drive, then I tried to open them up on my other computer (Which doesn't have internet access but is where RCT3 is), and then I tried to extract them to the styles folder, but it said the files were corrupt.

Is there anything I am doing wrong? The computer RCT3 is on is fairly new, made about 3-4 years ago and is a Dell Desktop Dimension 2400.

I don't have any patches stored on that computer. Do I need a patch?

As you can see, I am new to all this custom scenery stuff and trying to learn my way around.

Did you d/l the zip files, or the self installing exe files?

I would have to say the Zip files.

Here's a silly question, can you tell me what d/l means (Blushing)?

I downloaded the files onto this computer and then put them onto my portable USB drive and tried to extract them from the zip file on my other computer. So I'm curious as to if some of the hidden files, if there are any, were misplaced or something when I moved the files off of this computer and onto the USB drive.

It can be found at www.modstothemax.net but you have to register & be logged in to download the files.

It can also be found at http://www.vodhin.net/RCT3Community/download.php?list.3

mazeinies - you're not using the North American version I'm assuming, correct? If so, did you download the install instruction manual? There's a section which tells you where to 'direct' the installation if you are not using the US release. Also, if RCT3 is installed on a different drive letter (other then C), you need to make sure that you put that letter in (on the self extract program).

I tried that but it said it couldn't download:cry:
