here is a simple tutorial for the scenery importer, it doesnt cover a few things like texture sharing/references and a couple other things but it covers the basics.

Firstly, get the latest version
http://users.tpgi.com.au/adsloptd/rct3imp111.zip
and the example .sid files
http://users.tpgi.com.au/adsloptd/sids.zip

Open the importer
You should see this dialog
http://users.tpgi.com.au/adsloptd/main.png
Select which theme you want this to be (this determines which icon it appears under)
and what name to call your theme (this should be reasonably unique to prevent clashes with other themes with the same name)
Next, press the "scenery" button
Then press "add"
You should see this dialog, we will come back to all that soon.
http://users.tpgi.com.au/adsloptd/sid.png
Then press "Create OVL"
You should see this dialog
http://users.tpgi.com.au/adsloptd/scenery.png
now press "open ASE file"
Then open your ASE file.
Now press "add texture"
You should see this dialog.
http://users.tpgi.com.au/adsloptd/texture.png
Type in a texture name.
Open the texture file (and the alpha file if you have an alpha texture) and set the recolorable settings.
Do this for all your textures.
Next, select the entries in the "mesh list" and for each of them press "mesh flags".
You should see this dialog.
http://users.tpgi.com.au/adsloptd/mesh.png
If you do not want the mesh to be imported, press "dont import mesh" (meshes called root are automatically set to "dont import mesh")
Select which texture and texture style you want for the mesh as well as any other settings you want to change.
Once you have done this for EVERY mesh, go to the file menu and select "save scenery file". Save the .scn file. If there are meshes that DONT have a texture and texture style, there will be problems.
Now, press "save scenery ovl" and save the scenery ovl file. (one warning, once you create the scenery ovl, do not rename the ovl file, if you want a different name go back to "save scenery ovl" again and save under a different name)
Then close the "create scenery" dialog.
If you have more ovl files to create, repeat the above process.
You will be back at the "edit scenery settings" dialog
press "cancel" for now and close the scenery settings dialog.
then press "icon textures" and "add"
You will see this dialog.
http://users.tpgi.com.au/adsloptd/icon.png
give the icon texture a name and open the texture file (a RGB or RGBA PNG file)
If you want, you can have more than one icon texture. but be aware that each icon texture takes up RAM so dont use more than you need.
Next, go back to the main window and press "Icon References" and "add"
You will see this dialog
http://users.tpgi.com.au/adsloptd/gsi.png
Give the icon reference a name, select the icon texture for it to use and fill in the top, left, bottom and right items.
These items represent a rectangle from the texture that will be used as an icon.
If you want more than one icon, add them all now.
now press "text strings" and "add"
You will see this dialog
http://users.tpgi.com.au/adsloptd/text.png
fill in the text and name for the text string.
Do this for all the text strings.
Now, go back and press "scenery" and "add"
Press "select ovl" and select your scenery ovl.
Then fill in the location within the theme, group and scenery icon and string (press "disable group" if you dont want it to be in a scenery group). Fill in "cost" and "refund". And select "supports type". For all the other fields, you can fill them in manually or open one of the .sid files I dumped from stock items (and then tweak manually if you want). Press "open SID" to open a .sid file.
Once all the fields are filled in, you can press "ok".
Repeat this for all your scenery items.
Then go back to the main window and select "file-save theme file" and save the .thm file for your theme.
Then you can press "install theme" to install the theme.
Now open RCT3 and see your new scenery im the scenario editor.

If you have any questions or anything isnt clear enough, let me know and I will try to clarify.

It's a model file nickham, if you have 3dsMax you can export in this format to use with Jonwil's importer program. If you don't have 3dsMax, you need to convert the file with the Biturn converter program to this format.

Redbox is an example for in the tutorial... you need to make one for to follow the redbox in the tutorial to get success imported. Of course, you don't have to be naming as redbox,

For ASE,

You need to save the ASE of your model before you start the Jonwil's Importer v11.1
Get the ASE file, you might need to convert to the right format,
BUT, i dunno about Gmax, so I dunno if you can export ASE file by Gmax.
If can then it will be easy way, but if not you need to convert by other program for you.
I used Biturn for convert the 3D model file and it is free... Try search on Google 'Biturn' and normally it is on the top list. ;)

In Biturn,
If you can't export ASE in Gmax, You can save any other 3D format like 3DS, which it is better.
Then use biturn for 3DS to convert ASE. That's it!

When i say Save Scenery OVL
It says: No Meshes to export.
But i clicked
Dont import mesh

In the mesh list is a word: Box01

Can some one help me?

Edit: I maked a new one and i called it Logo
Now it says by meshes: logo
But when i click Mesh flags i dont understand what i need to fill in there :(

jonwil
08-19-2005, 11:13 AM
That error means that you told it not to import any of the meshes from your 3D file (which means there is no geometry to put into the output ovl file)

As for the mesh flags, it should be reasonably obvious what the settings do, just play around with them.

What to do?

And i don't understand the Icon References :(

Gibdo

True color would mean its 24-bit. (eg. 24-bit Bitmap)

A power of 2 means just that. (eg. nē) The texture I assume would have to be square. So make you images 2x2, 4x4, 8x8, 16x16, and so on. I made mine 64x64.

iceatcs

only for lowest version of jonwil import like 10 or lower.

Your Icon files have to be in PNG format. Assuming you have Windows XP, then MS Paint will do that for ya, so you don't need any special program or anything.

The Icon references is where you reference your icon. To save space, its good to have one icon image. To take up less memory. You typically want a little picture of the scenery piece for each one of your pieces. When you create a icon file, you can create one that is say 512x512, like this.

http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/3443/icons0dk.jpg
This is an icon file created by Battor77. *Hope you don't get mad for me using it :)

In your Icon references, you give names to each icon and its location in the icon image. The Logo's top left pixel is 0,0 and the bottom right pixel is 63,63. The next image of the wizard hat is 64,0 and 127,63.

When you set up your scenery file, you just pick among the names to show which each piece looks like. This method is much better then having a small 64x64 PNG file for each and every piece you have. Hope that clears things up. :)

uncle_adolph, If your using v11.1 then the file menu its referring to is in the same Window where you create the OVL. You have the Save Scenery OVL button that you're referring to, then in the uper left corner is the File Menu that has the Save Scenery File in it.

I just downloaded a set of custom scenery. All of them are already OVL's, but they crashed the game, so I tried the importer. I filled everything in on the "Edit Scenery Settings" page (except for the "scenery icon" and "scenery name on string" which are both pull down menu's with no options), but when I pressed OK, nothing happened.

Is this when you try to make the ovl files for the model? If so, you'll probably need to remake the ase file again & see if that fixes it.

if you importer crash when convert the ASE, it can be mean you haven't fill up all in the importer for ASE to OVL, (in Edit Scenery Setting) or bad ASE(<- you could give me the ASE in pm and checking it out if it is work to save OVL mean we will know what the problem is from your system.

If you are happy - just pm for email, then I can have a look the ASE.

Hi Once again, I am having trouble saving the scenery OVL. It jsut crashes. I have filled out all the mesh flags and saved the .scn file. What is happening?

marnetmar
01-04-2006, 09:44 PM
Is this happening when you make the OVL files? Or after you make them & try to import them?

Phil
01-04-2006, 10:20 PM
on the screen where it says import .ase file etc, down the bottom left you are supposed to save the .ovl, and when i press it, the tool crashes and error screens me.

marnetmar
01-04-2006, 10:27 PM
Have you added all the texture files/information before trying to save the OVL file?

Phil
01-04-2006, 10:43 PM
I add the texture files, and I assign the texture to the mesh file. I also assign a style. I then save the scenery file (via the file menu.) The next step in the tutorial tells me to save the .ovl (I think) using the bottom elft button. When I enter a file name and hit save the program then errors and crashes.

marnetmar
01-04-2006, 10:50 PM
Do you have all the icon settings & icon texture & setting already entered into the program?

Phil
01-04-2006, 11:04 PM
I havn't yet gotten to that part in the tutorial. This is where I am:

Sorry for the big quote. Where it stops is where the program starts crashing.

marnetmar
01-04-2006, 11:06 PM
It sounds like you're doing everything right so far. Are you using more than 1 texture file for this model?

Phil
01-04-2006, 11:07 PM
Nope, jsut the one. Does the fact it is a 24 bit bmp change anything? I have photoshop so whatever format I need to save in I can do.

Btw, thanks for all the help on this ;)

marnetmar
01-04-2006, 11:15 PM
Ok, that's the problem, just make sure it's 256x256 or 128x128 & you can open it in Paint & save it as 256 color bmp & that'll be an 8 bit bmp texture. It should work then.

Phil
01-04-2006, 11:26 PM
There is still a crash. I don't understand what is goign wrong :S

marnetmar
01-04-2006, 11:31 PM
Check your PM's Frogee

shyguy
01-05-2006, 12:04 AM
Okay, first you load a texture file and name it. Then you choose your object and pick the style, such as SIOpaque. Then you choose the name that you just came up with for you texture file in the drop down menu. There should only be ONE texture file name there. If there are more than one and you have more than one listed in the texture box, this will cause a crash.
Don't click on the "Don't import mesh" button. Don't change any of the other settings when you assign the mesh it's texture. Any of these things can also cause a crash. (Though, a simple error message would suffice, jonwil. ) You don't need to save it as a .scn file either. I never do this. Maybe after you do this, it's re-setting something and you need to re-do some of the above steps. I don't know. I'm just trying to think of everything I can.

If none of this helps, then your 3D object may not be saved in the correct format. (In other words, if it's from 3D max, if you don't convert it to a mesh, it might casue a crash) But I don't know what 3D program you're using so I can't help you on this one.

You may want to list what you do, step by step so we can analyze exactly what you're doing.

Phil

I used the Biturn converter to convert my file to .ASE

Here is a step by step of what I am tyring to do:
1: Run the tool and select generic theme and enter a name.
2: Click Scenery
3: Click Add
4: Click Create OVL
5: Browse for .ASE file and open.
6: Make a name for the texture and import texture. No alpha and no colour options.
7: Click "rocks" in the mesh list and assign rock texture to this mesh with "SIOpaque"
8: Save scenery file via file menu.
9: Click Save scenery OVL.
10: Enter name and save and then the program crashes while saving.

Guybrush_47
01-05-2006, 08:45 AM
Have you added the name strings?

Phil
01-05-2006, 08:51 AM
I havn't gotten to the name strings yet. It is the final part of the tutorial yes?

This is where I am. When the quotes stop is where my game freezes.

Guybrush_47
01-05-2006, 08:55 AM
Okay, my suggestion is this:

delete the .ase, delete the .ovl's

re-export your model, and redo the .ovl stage again. I find that alot of the time the .ase can get corrupt pretty easily. If thats the case, everything else will get corrupt. Try it again, and it should work.

Phil
01-05-2006, 09:07 AM
There is still a crash. I hope marnetmar will be able to fix this when he has the time.

Guybrush_47

In which case it's either the biturn is not working properly, or its a model/texture issue.

Phil
01-05-2006, 09:20 AM
Could it possibly be a problem with Wings3d (My modelling program.)? I export as a .3DS and then convert to .ASE with biturn.

Also I am not switching to milkshape cos it confuzzles me lol. Wings3d is very different and I like it.

Is "rocks" the only thing listed in the mesh list?

No the is the root mesh file aswell but I don't touch it.

shyguy
01-06-2006, 01:04 AM
I'm not sure what to do with the root mesh, as I don't use Biturn. And one more thing...Do you have the latest version of jonwil's importer program. Older versions didn't work if you left the root mesh in. Other than that, I don't know what else you're doing wrong, unless it's your 3D program.

Also I am having a problem with my spaceships. Only 1 model will import. Same crash jsut as before.

Also my imported model has no sid for svd. :S

The texture files need to be square & 64x64, 128x128, 256x256 pixels in size. They need to be saved as an 8 bit bmp file. You can save them in MS Paint as 256 color bmp files & that will be 8 bit.

I'm not sure why you're getting that error, but you might try making the ase/ovl files again & then reimport them & see if that helps.

Oh sorry for not editing that last post. I found out what was the problem. I UV mapped my models and now they all work. I thoguht textures might be a problem but they were just as you said. Thanks for answering these questions anyway.

Actually at the moment I am wondering exactly what flags make an object go undetectable and what do I put in the group string text and group icon boxes for each scenery piece?

I click create scnery ovl and it gets the error, Texture not square 8bpp image with hieght/width a power of 2, its confuseing, whats wrong?

marnetmar
03-05-2006, 08:16 PM
Plokoon, the texture needs to be square & 128x128 or 256x256 in size & saved as an 8 bit bmp file. You can save it in paint as a 256 color bmp file & it'll be 8 bit.

Look in your main folder of the "C" drive, on a few occasions the importer has installed a theme to that location. If it's there, just delete it & re-install & it should go to the right place.

Google Sketchup does not support ASE or any format that would go in to RCT3. It's a basic version of the real thing, and does nothing but allow you to export your work in to Google Earth.

Hi!

Now I will try it here. I’m playing RCT3 from the first day of release in Germany and build the big park CALDERAMA with a very huge dome and lot of buildings, e.g. multi-storaraged stations for rides. For my new project I need special objekts which I will build and import as Customer Objects. I tryed that long days and searched hours in different forums. But ther still is one question open:

How the devil I get reflecting walls and objekts into the game without paying hundreds or thausands of Euros for a professionel program like MAYA or 3dMax?

I tryed:

- Blender: difficult to work::pout:

- Anim8or: Easier to work, exactly measurement is possible. I build some nice walls, lighting objects and glass-parts and imported them via Bitrun and Jonwils Importer to the game. And I can use them there. I tryed dozends of combinations of adjustments for textures at Anim8or and Jonwil, but in the game no part reflects light and all of them let pass through the light of sun or lamps.

- SketchUp: This night I downloaded the free version. Compared to te other programs it is heavenly easy to work with. But the program export only in his own skb-file, not in 3ds or ASE. And Bitrun don’t know skb. So SketchUp-free is not able to use for RCT3 projekts.

So, how I get reflecting parts? I have so many Ideas for Objects and Scenerys, but they are nothing when I can’t realise them.

Best wishes from Bremen, Germany

well vodhin did some tests with the mesh flags. also their is a bunch of frontiers sid's available for download HERE! (http://sebar.com/jonwil/) maybe you can take a look at those if your trying to make a specific item, if not vodhin would probably be the one to ask.
