Case file XPE343:

Background:
Date of discovery: April, 2005.
Site: Granite quarry in an undisclosed Top Secret location in Washington State.

An enormous XENOLITH of unknown origin and material was discovered embedded within the granite. (A xenolith is a non-indigenous rock or crystal often associated with meteor fragments.) The government was called in to investigate and excavation of the rock took approximately 3 months. The Box (Pandora’s Box as it has been called) is a gigantic cube roughly 250 feet long on each side and 250 feet tall. The material is unlike any element known on earth. It is black in color...yet strangely empty in appearance. It reflects no light whatsoever...almost as if it is made of space itself. A portal was discovered on the north face of the Box...a breach of some sort was found in the wall. It was about 6 feet by 6 feet but was invisible to the eye...but it could be felt. If you put your hand through it simply disappeared into the cold blackness. The excavation site is now considered Top Secret and access is granted only to Top Secret government personnel. Scientists continue to study and speculate what the Box is and where it came from. Most now agree that it is somehow extraterrestrial. But why was it buried beneath the earth’s surface. How long has it been there? How many more are there? What is its purpose? What is inside of it...besides fear itself?

Lieutenant Paul Webster: Only known survivor of the Pandora Expedition into the heart of the XENOLITH.

Injuries: 2nd degree burns on his hands and feet, partial amnesia, malnutrition, tremors, possible schizophrenic episodes (claims to hear voices), paranoia.

Transcript from his debriefing upon finding him wandering alone just outside the XENOLITH:

WEBSTER:

"Immediately upon stepping through the portal into the Box we were dragged away by someone...something...I don’t know what to call them...it...now please understand that I don’t believe in little green men but...they...we saw nothing...we could only hear them...it was totally dark. (the whispers...evil...) I could hear the others for only a short while...we were separated and I believe sedated. We woke up who knows how long afterwards...we were in two groups of four...strapped onto these two sled-like vehicles. They sent us on the sleds into some sort of giant matrix...it seemed to be the Box’s brain. Over what seemed like weeks we made countless passes through this matrix and it seemed to read our minds each time. It was trying to study us! Its main concern seemed to be discovering what we were afraid of! The horrors...the voices...make them stop...oh...no...please make them stop!!! What do you fear? Darkness...Monsters...Evil...Fire...Drowning...Small Spaces...The End...Falling...Make them stop!!! Get them away from me!!!! AAAAHHHHHH!!!"

(at this point Lieutenant Webster became hysterical and had to be sedated...we have been unable to get him to speak since this initial interview...he seems nearly catatonic...just sitting, staring blankly, saying nothing...)

What we know so far:

The previous attempt to send a robotic probe into the portal on July 13, 2005 ended in failure with loss of the probe’s signal immediately upon ingress. The probe was discovered the next morning shattered to pieces at the base of the Box on the east side. The only fragment of tape salvaged from the probe’s recording device contained a moment of what seemed to be human voices calling out for help.

It had later been decided that a team of soldiers would be sent in to explore the Box and search for the humans possibly trapped inside. The Team was called the Pandora Expedition. They understood the risks but all bravely took on their assignment.

Lieutenant Webster and 7 other Special Forces troops entered the portal on the north side of the XENOLITH (Pandora’s Box) at 0900 Pacific Time on August 5, 2005. Radio/Video signal was immediately lost with all the soldiers. No contact was made for 7 days. Webster was discovered wandering around the eastern base of the XENOLITH alone and in a daze at 1345 Pacific Time on August 12, 2005. After he was checked out by the medics, he was questioned. Now we wait--hopefully Webster will begin talking again and can fill in the holes in his story.

In the mean time, the government is asking for volunteers to form a rescue party. The plan is to enter the Box once again and to try to find and rescue the missing soldiers. Only the bravest souls should volunteer. This mission will be extremely dangerous. Who will go inside? Will you?

Here is some film footage shot at the site from a helicopter (sorry the footage is so dark...but it was filmed at night...and well...since the XENOLITH reflects no light...it is difficult to see it in the dark):

The ride file is now available. NOTE: Pumper and Marnetmar's darkride pack is REQUIRED for this park file...since the entire Xenolith structure is made out of their pitch black wall pieces. NOTE: it is strongly suggested that you download the version that comes with the sound effects files to get the full creepy "X-Files-ish" effect. Unzip the file...place the park file into your RCT3 parks folder and the .wav files into your Atari RollerCoasterTycoon3 music folder BEFORE opening the park.

Ride file by itself with no sound files (smaller download) now available here:

Ride file plus sound effect files (larger dowload ~12Megs) available here:
http://rapidshare.de/files/4556241/Xenolith10closedplussoundscape.zip.html

Lieutenant Webster has been having a recurring nightmare ever since he escaped the XENOLITH...here is his nightmare in the form of a video...watch it only if you dare...it is quite disturbing:

Okay...since no one is commenting on the video I'll show a few screens of the inside of the ride. These show glimpses of the Fear Matrix at the heart of the XENOLITH and some of the Fears: Drowning and The End of the World...and the unload station too.

Fisherman I love how you always manage to come up with such elaborate backstories for your creations, you are so imaginative! Me, I just build a coaster and try to make a suitable station for it, but you, you give your creations life!
I downloaded your video and will be downloading this when its finished of course.:D

Thanks for the comments everyone! Those "pipe thingies" are the big colorable track spiral-coil-doo-hickies from Pumper and Marnetmar's dark ride custom scenery set...that set is required for this ride.

I finished the big video but I have to wait to upload it until next week...we're finally getting DSL...yeah...I still have dial-up :p

Thanks for the kind words Ride_Exchanger! I'm a fan of your rides as well! :D

LOL - spiral-coil-doo-hickies

Those screens look very intriguing, not to mention, super unique. I've rarely seen the Springy thing being used.

Well they looked exactly like the pipe-thingies that would be inside a gigantic cyborg's brain...so I used them! :D Thanks Pumper (and Marnetmar) for all your hard work on those dark ride objects and all the other stuff you've made. I don't know what I'd ever have done without those pitch-black pieces!

Pretty trippy man....

I feel for your janitors, you are going to have to build a pool complex to hold all the puke :p

I really enjoyed the story for this ride, and the ride does exactly what is intended.

Wow, just rode it.. and that was pretty scary! For the first time ever I was glad that I could zoom away and hear that Summer Air Music after the ride had ended.
Great concept, although I think that it wouldn`t make a realistic theme-park ride. (it`s not that anything is bad - it`s just too real, at least for my taste) It was more like a nightmare or bad trip... But I guess you just intended it as a stand-alone experience. As that it really is a piece of art. As disturbing as a David Lynch Movie!

Fisherman
08-31-2005, 10:22 AM
Wow thanks Saskro! Yeah...this one was more an experiment in story-telling on my part than a realistic ride...but I'm glad that it is having the effect intended. So what did you think of the sound effects package? It differs a bit from what's on the "recurring nightmare" video but contains most of the alien voices :alien: and the monster roars.

-Derek :D

I`m just downloading the recurring nightmare, so I can`t compare yet (I`ll edit after I watched it).
But I thought that monotonous voices were pretty scary and hypnotizing, and the roar gave me a strange feeling because you never knew its actual source. (the funny part is, that one of your soundfiles was entitled "lion" or something like that - so I could always keep saying to myself "No problem, it`s just a lion") ;)

Edit: Video was also great! It´s cool to hear the alien voices name every single fearful situation when you get exposed to it.
And it ended like I hoped it would, seeing the commander stumble around on the outside.

Did you record the alien voices yourself and than add effects?

Fisherman
08-31-2005, 10:36 AM
Yeah...the original sound effect was of a lion roar...but I edited it to make it sound more "other-worldly" with echoes and reverbs and stuff. The video goes along more with the back-story I wrote but it does contain the alien voices...and the "lion".

Thanks for the feedback! Check out my XIBALBA ride and video too. :)

Yes I saw it in your other thread. It is great! It was a bit strange with all the voices, but the scenery was very cool, although it is not your best ride.
