Here's the first pic from my new project. This is another recreation, with a twist. I'm sure a few of you will already recognize the building below. My goal will be to recreate this park, as close as RCT3 and the community scenery pack designers will allow. I will also have to take some creative liberties with this project, as some things will be impossible to get perfect. I will also be setting the calender back, about 50 years, for this project.

Skip ahead to my next post for details of this project.

This is as close as I can get, so far. Hopefully, new scenery will help me get it even closer.

Looks good. A new project from Shyguy?!?! Can't wait.

Well, where did you get those wall pieces that look really realistic?

The white ones near the top that remind me of crown molding.

larry241
09-08-2005, 10:34 AM
Let's see, from bottom to top.
Office roof, colored slate window, new custom awnings, office cornice, colored walls, (I think) little red striped are from Atlantis roof - I've used that same piece before, vertical white peices are from Western, you can turn the office cornice around to get it to stick out, spooky castle roof with window, office roof on top, with what looks like chain link fence. I think Atlantis fence might have been better.
AMAZING, TRULY AMAZING. Excellent use of walls, totally awesome!
Thanks for sharing your sneak peak!!!!!

So what pack will i find these awnings in?

'Edit: Duh.. found them now'

Sorry i also am glad to add that this building is a lot like the one in the picture very accurate.

Now if only they would let us do custom colours its very limited now.

And Shy, have you got into the beta because if you have i'll be hoping you sort out your parks aswell ;]

Dont forget about us on the normal forums loving your work =]

It is nice to see that you using mine bits. I canít wait to see what you going on about. Sound and look like Disney style park but maybe I am wrong.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the comments.

Well, that wasn't too difficult to figure out. I guess that means I did a pretty good job recreating it. Well, here's my idea...Creating Disneyland circa 1955. Now so far, many have attempted to recreate a Disney Park, but few, if any, have ever finished. This is a daunting task and I can understand why there has been little success. I make no guarantees that I'll fair any better.

So I think what I'm going to do is start with Main Street and see how that goes. Then, I'll work may way through the other lands, each one on its own separate map. I expect this to be rather slow, cause I don't want to neglect Wonder World. That's still my top priority.

Now, here's where I get REALLY ambitious, and I almost doubt I'll do this, but...I would like to then bring Disneyland up to the present, year by year, building each new ride and attraction as it was added each year. Time will tell if I ever get to this phase.

Now, here's my plea to the community. I NEED YOUR HELP!!!! Are there any scenery pack wizards out there who would like to design elements for each land? Take the Emporium, up above. I hate the spooky castle roofs. But I need the dormer windows. And Main Street is full of those windows. One or two colorable styles of dormer windows would make Main Street look so much more realistic. I can't use the spooky castle roofs on everything.
A couple styles of awnings would also be great. These could be fairly generic, so others could use them in non Disney parks as well.

I know you guys are busy, so I'm not really expecting you to be able to "join" this project. I'm going to check out jonwill's program and read a bit about it, but I don't really think I'll have the time to learn 2 programs (jonwill's and a 3D program) nor the time to design the pieces myself. I may just make due with what is available and make a lot of compromises.

Larry241,

You were pretty close. The red stripes and white verical ones are actually from Pumper's Supports. I'll have to check out that Atlantis piece as I've never used anything from that set.

StayingDead,

I'm not in the beta. Like I have time for THAT, too!

After seeing the amazing work you have done here Shyguy. I have to say that I am exstatic to see this project come to life. Your idea to bring it up to date is an awesome idea. I hope that you are able to continue doing what you want with this park.

GOOD LUCK!

Good idea on scenery packs. Elements like that would be very useful for any park whether a Disney recreation or not. Adventureland USA a park in Iowa has a main street very much like Disneyland CA and so do many other parks.

If you haven't already seen it, and I am betting you have, yesterland.com has a lot of vintage Disneyland photos.

I started a similar project last year, WAY before SOAKED and custom scenery. Unfortunately (or, rather, fortunately) work has prevented me from making any progress on it, but I'm planning on starting it back up in a few weeks. I'm happy to see that the new Soaked and custom scenery really can make a difference. My recreation is accurate to 10 feet. I have a huge original blueprint and blow ups of satellite imagery to go off of.

HERE (http://forums.nedesigns.com/index.php?act=ST&f=5&t=9861&hl=rct3%20disneyland&st=100) is a link to the topic on the NEdesigns forums tracking my progress.

What a wonderful Emporium!
I can't wait to see your talent in recreating Main Street, with all rct3 scenery limitations.
I'm making my personal version of Disneyland (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=481984), but I'm still on Main Street: in fact, recreating Main Street, with all its shops, can be very boring. Furthermore, stalls available in rct3 are so bad!

composerboy,

Your park looks great. And very accurate! Especially considering it is pre-Soaked. I have some major competition here!

filesnav2k,

Your park looks wonderful, too! Great job!

Park Novice,

I would be honored to have your help. I just hope you have the time. I've seen the list of requests you've received so I was afraid to ask, figuring you wouldn't have the time.

Which brings me to this idea...

I'd love to form a virtual company called ShyCo. :p The goal would be to build the best recreation of Disneyland as possible. And in addition to that, the communtiy would get lot's of new content in the form of scenery packs to use. I would be the CEO and designer/builder of the park. The "employees" of this company would consist of graphic artist's (scenery pack designers), consultants (those who provide knowledge and can seek out photographic archives for reference) and maybe a videographer (someone who wants to make videos of the park to share with the community)

It could be a fun project and I think we'd get a lot of recognition from the RCT community. Anyway, let me know if anyone's interested. And I'd put no pressure on anyone to make any lengthy commitments. If you want to join for a while but then decide you don't like it or don't have the time, don't worry. I'll be happy with any contribution you have to offer.

I like the idea of dividing up Disney into smaller maps. I thought that before. I've seen some pretty good park recreations, but dies as soon as you try to play it. I think if some of them divided their parks, you could get some pretty good maps. Good luck on your project.

Thanks for the offers of help, guys. I will let you know the things I need help on as this project gets underway. The most important thing I'll need is custom scenery!!! It would nice to get a group together that can do that, and then maybe combine their efforts to release a "Main Street" pack or a "Fantasyland" pack.

For those who can't do that stuff, I might just have a question like, "Does someone have a picture of...." or "Does anyone remember where the Main Street Shooting Gallery was?" (Yes, there WAS a Main Street Shooting Gallery!!!)

Though, perhaps you could do a couple simple objects for me that wouldn't take too long. A couple simple awnings like the ones in your brand names pack would be easy and greatly needed. If you think you might have time for that, let me know and I'll post a pic or 2 of what I'd like.

Thanks.

Also, here's a couple requests to whomever would like to help. I need 1/3 tile high colorable piece just like the white and red thin lengths to go where the circle is. colorable and stackable.

And, how about a doorway like the one I sketched in. I'm tired of building entrances as just big square openings! :p

I just learned how to use Jonwill's scenery editor!!!! After many failed attempts, I was finally able to import a giant ugly red box tipped on its side into RCT3!!!! WOOHOO!!!!!
And the game didn't crash or anything! :D

Now, I just need to learn 3dsmax so I can make something actually useful. Which means a new job is opening up at ShyCo Studios. A graphics advisor to help poor shyguy with all his newbie questions that he will soon be having.

Okay, back to reading through the 2000 posts on the scenery editor in the general forum. Let's see, I'm on page 10. Just 60 more to go....:bulb:

This is a fantastic project shyguy, and one many of us look forward too. I'm also trying to recreate parts of Disneyland and I feel your frustrations, I've changed to more of a Main Street 'feel' than an accurate reproduction.

At RCT2.com and RCT*Mart we just finished a Disneyland Project for the 50th Anniversary for rct2. I'd be happy to pass on any information we may have collected that might be useful for rct3.

p.s. Gawd, I so totally agree with you about the need for different doors!

We also need a lot more Victorian 'gingerbread' trim!

I'll give you a little tip on that shyguy, more than likely a lot of the trim pieces & stuff like that that you want to make will be fairly simple to model. The main thing is to get some really good textures, since you're going to lose some quality when you convert them to 8bit bmp files ;)

Well, as I expected, I haven't had anyone join me in this project. A couple people were interested, but no definites so far. But I realise you guys have your own projects to do, so that's okay.

But what this DOES mean is this project is going to come to a crashing halt while I see if I can learn to make my own custom scenery. I've got the basics down on using jonwill's importer, but I know nothing about 3D designing. But I'm going to give it a go, anyway.

I've actually imported a couple simple pieces into the game...just some small moulding pieces that are basically supports with collision detection turned off. Below is what I've done so far. The top picture is the original version and the bottom is with the new, very subtle changes.

Yes, I know. Not much difference, huh. But I've at least taken the first step in making custom scenery. Now it's time to learn what I can do with a good 3D program. Any suggestions on which to get??? I'm using 3dsmax 7 trial version right now. I really like it, but when the trial runs out, I will probably have to use something else. I just don't think I can justify spending $3000 for a software program. But I'm just foolish enough to do it anyway. Someone please stop me!!! Milkshape is $25, and that's an option. Is there something better, but more affordable than 3dsmax? I thought I read somewhere that you could buy a one year license to use 3dsmax for under $200, but I'm not sure if I was reading it right and I can't find the site now. Any help or advice would be very appreciated.

shyguy,
I think I (or someone else) has asked you this before but I have never seen the answer. What do you do for a living? (as in, how do you make your money?). I would love to know. Thanks!
It is a great start you got going there, I know I could figure out and be fine using jonwill's importer, and I have design experience enough that I am sure I could do well with making my own scenery, but I just don't have the time to commit to it right now. I would especially love to help you recreate the original Disneyland, but my point still stands. I still haven't finished my Disneyland on RCT3, let alone anything else. Just too much to do, and not enough time in the day. Why does sleep have to waste so much time! Argh!
Good luck, I love checking out your projects, you are very talented/gifted with this theme park design thing, and like I have said in the past, I would love to go into business with you someday to create a real one of these!

This is one question I'm just not going to answer. I'd rather not spoil the mystery behind my persona. Or maybe it's just I wish I was in a more glamorous job than what I do. Believe me, it's nothing related to design, theme parks, or anything remotely related to this hobby of mine. I do have an art background and what I do is somewhat tied into that, but not on a creative level.

Okay, that's all I'm saying. Now, does anyone have any answers to the questions in my previous post????

Just my opinion here shyguy, but to get started Milkshape will do everything you want & be able to get your creations into the game & for $25.00 if later on you decide modeling is making you crazy lol you're only out a little cash. You can always upgrade to a different program in the future, but this would be a cheap way to get started & see if you like it or not. There's several of us around here that already use it, so help's not far away either lol

I'll probably choose Milkshape, as you kindly suggested in a previous post. It makes the most sense, especially if a lot of others are using it. I will have a LOT of questions, I'm sure.

No problem with the questions, we all had to ask when we were learning. I can't remember if you already tried the trial version or not, but it's free for 30 days if you haven't gotten it yet, so that gives you some time to play around & get used to it before you have to pay for it.

Unfortunately, I downloaded it a while ago, but didn't have time nor interest then to try it out. Now it's expired. I downloaded it a second time (newer version this time) but I still get a message saying it's expired. So I don't think I can get a second chance for a trial period.

Okay, so now I have Milkshape registered, but there are no help files. :( I downloaded the help file, but it opens to a "page not found" error!

Are there any tutorials on making a simple RTC object on the forums? I found some online tutorials, but they're for making characters for Quake and such.

ALSO, I have found a plug-in so I can export Gmax files to a format that Milkshape can access. Then from Milkshape, I can export to a .3ds file, etc. Gmax is SO much better than Milkshape, at least from what I can tell so far. It looks just like 3dsmax. I'm thinking about using Gmax now. Does anyone have any comments on this?

That is correct KiDFoX, although it shows how to make a coaster car for the UR game, it really shows just about everything you'll need to know how to use Milkshape & to apply the textures & make texture maps. It's about 8 or 9 pages, but anyone can learn a lot from it.
One other thing shuguy, you don't have to export to 3ds to get your models into the game. You can just convert from the ms3d (Milkshape format) to the ASE format with Biturn.

May be slow at the moment but, I get there in the end. Here is the dormer model I said I would have a crack at.

http://images5.theimagehosting.com/cdormer.jpg (http://www.theimagehosting.com)

The pic shows the dormer using the Castle roof tile. I am still having some texture issues in terms of recolouring at the moment, but, should have these sorted out in the next day or so.

Since trying this, I have discovered that, the coloured wall set and western wall set will require a different dormer model all together as, the slope on them is so slight.

I think the way to proceed with this, is to have seperate roof pieces with, all the available tile images from the default sets available then, a recolourable dormer piece which can be used on any roof.

Let me know what you think.

You are doing some brilliant work Park Novice. That will be such a useful component. I could use it myself on many of the building I am about to build for Wooley Swamp.

shyguy
09-14-2005, 01:18 AM
Park Novice,

That's looking pretty good so far. I think it's a tad too big, though. Can you make it a bit thinner and not so tall? And, I'm not sure if you were saying this or not, but the best thing to do is to make a one colorable window that can be used on all the roof pieces instead of one for each. Instead of making the back part of it on an angle, just square it off and then we can sink it into roofs with different slopes.

What I'm goig to do when I learn to make 3D objects, is to make lot's of small parts that can be combined in different combinations to fit on RCT3's existing wall sets. In other words, differently shaped mouldings that are colorable instead of full wall sets. That would increase their versatility tenfold.

Kidfox,

I stand corrected. I didn't know that was a Milkshape tutorial. So, thank you.

This is outstanding stuff. The amount of detail you can now add to buildings is incredible. I couldn't imagine how long it would take me to do buildings. It would take me two years to finish a park.
By the way, you should try the office cornice corner piece above the windows to wrap the cornice.
See ya!

Well, I'll have to share for those who want to download the park. Though it's going to be some time til it's done. I'm making the pieces to be very versatile so you will be able to create hundreds of different styles and color combinations.

You're really doing awesome and important work. My only complaint is that if you look at a photo of the Emporium, you'll see that the corner is at a 45 degree angle to the rest of the building. Your tower should be set back one tile to fake this diagonal (unless you want to make some diagonal pieces... hint hint..) Also, one of the entrances to the Emporium is under the tower, as opposed to windows.

shyguy
09-21-2005, 07:29 PM
composerboy,

No, I'm not going to make diagonal pieces. (But I sure thought about it.) I'd have to make a diagonal version of every single new moulding, wall, and roof piece. That's just a little bit too much work. And the peeps would all walk through the walls.

Since a lot of Disneyland buildings are built on angles, I'm just going to have to redesign the shape of many of the buildings. I may reconfigure the Emporium a bit. Not sure yet.

Thanks. I found a website that lists EVERYTHING they added to Disneyland, year by year. Down to each new shop, restaurant, etc., etc. Only thing is, there aren't any pics on the site. So I'll let you know if I need anything else.

The legendary ShyGuy back in action!

Even though you have only done one building, with some custom scenery, this thread is already on its third page! This could even rival the CoasterTown by YNH.

Well back to the topic, I love the idea that you are doing your own custom scenery, to put the icing on the cake. Like WW I am sure this recreation wont disappoint anyone, as it is different, it is a recreation, but setting back in the past? Clever twist, kudos!

Well, things are moving slowly but surely. I've redesigned the Emporium a bit. I also had to change the brick moulding because it disappeared when moving only a short distance away. I believe it has to do with small objects with high polygon counts. I used a brick texture instead of actual carved bricks. It looks much better.

Still, lot's more to do, but I'll need to learn some new techniques with the 3D software, so back to the tutorials....

shyguy

This set is going to be immense. It will take months to finish...so, I'll probably break it into smaller releases such as Main Street Pack 1, MS Pack 2, etc.

Expect to wait about a month for the first pack. Definitely nothing before Wild is released.

These trim pieces you are making are going to be a great addition to all of our parks, and your recreation is turning out more and more accurate every time you make a new piece.

Your dedication to the accuracy of your work is an inspiration to all us other parkmakers. Thank You so Much!

It is amazing!! That is a Disneypark. The building has Disney written all over it. Very beautiful.

But can't you release some stuff sooner?? :) Because i'm working on a Disneypark looking like the one in Paris and i can use these amazing objects... but i'm not a professional like you with making scenery, so i depend on pros like you to create this amazing stuff. It would be great if we can download something.

I wish you a lot of luck with this, and i'm going to keep an eye on this topic every day because it is wonderful.

Has anyone figured how to make glass surfaces work right???

http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/3060/glass6hr.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Sometimes I can see objects behind the glass and sometimes I can't. Sometimes it looks fine when I place the walls, and then I'll look again, and the objects behind the glass disappear. And sometimes, I can see parts of objects. I put a some mermaids behind the glass and half their faces were missing. Other times they disappeared completely!

Does any one know the setting to use to make a surface either glossy or reflective? I believe JCat's Blox set has shiny pieces in it. I want to make the windows with the curtains look like glass.

omg - why don't you just make 2x4's and plywood and we can all build our own buildings?
Ha!!!
This is just amazing! It seems like every other day you completely out-do yourself.
I can't even imagine how long things would make to do a second building. Maybe we'll see the end of the park around Christmas time - next year!!!
Keep up the incredible work!!!!

For a little shine try the SIOpaqueSpecular50Reflection setting & if you want something really shiny, like the Phantasm sphere in my Dark Ride set use the SIOpaqueSpecular100Reflection setting ;)

Interesting... the shadows seem to appear through the glass or something else very odd. Park Novice has made transparent walls- or at leats they're transparent while at night and illuminated from behind...

Finally, an update...

As I get a better grasp of 3D designing, things will start moving more quickly. I've been re-doing most of the pieces, for various reasons, which explains the lack of recent updates. Here's where I am so far....

This stuff is amazing. I love the window sills, heads, the windows, the curtains.....okay, yeah, everything. Is it possible to have the balustrades without the spiked tips at the corner?
One thing, maybe it's an illusion, but the roof tiles don't seem to be matching. The tiles on the straight pieces seem to be more vertical than the corner tiles.
Amazing. Like I said - can't wait til xmas to see the next building. :D
Later!

Larry...

Thanks for pointing out the roof problem. I'll have to take care of that. As for the spiked corners...they're not removable. But there may be something similar without the spikes later.
