Main Street Set v1.2 is released!

Download version 1.2 which fixes a couple glitches and greatly improves the disappearing problem for some of the pieces, including the Triple Window.

The Emporium with the Main Street Set.

Click the link below and extract the files into your Rollercoaster Tycoon 3/Style/Themed directory.

Version 1.2

The disappearing problem has been greatly improved on the Dormers, the Cornices and the (yay!) Triple Window. Also, the lighting was backwards on the Awning, making it too dark. Now it's much brighter. Also, the Toys sign has been offset a bit for asthetic purposes.

The disappearing problem has been greatly improved by attaching the objects to a huge, transparent wall. Now you can move back twice as far before they start to vanish. Just be careful when coloring objects nearby, as you might accidentily click on the transparent wall instead, and color the wrong piece. (There's never a perfect solution...)

Get Version 1.2 HERE! (http://rapidshare.de/files/8364172/shy-Main_Street_Set_v1.2.zip.html)

If you have problems installing the above file, here's a self-extracting file, thanks to Beelitz.

Main Street v1.2.exe (http://rapidshare.de/files/8399383/shy-Main_Street_Set.exe.html)

This set works with Wild!!!!.

As my first scenery pack, there may be a couple of quirks you may come across, like pieces appearing in the game facing the wrong direction. Just use the Z key to turn the pieces the direction you want.

You'll find this pack is different from the typical scenery packs, as all the pieces are set to 1/4 tile. This adds great versatility to the pack, but makes placing pieces a little harder than usual. And instead of full walls, most of the objects are small pieces that need to be assembled to create what you want. Just read the tutorials in this thread and you should soon get the hang of it.

Have fun!

Main Street Set 2 coming soon.....

Don’t be offence, but just curious
Will it be increase lags even more for the peeps that have lowest system? Look like cos there are so many bits and bits. Likewise you willing go to use millions of them in your park.

But I would love to use that even it will be fine on my both systems as these are very high ended.

These pieces will be so useful! We need lots of small building blocks like these. They'll make buildings so much more detailed, as you've demonstrated above.
Well done!

That's a good question. These might increase lag. Some of the pieces have high polygon counts. My advice would be to use them at your discretion. A park decorated to the max with tons of scenery pieces is going to lag...

Excellent work so far shyguy   This all looks very nice so far & will be a great addition to the game.

I agree that a lot of scenery, any scenery, will cause lag in the game.

I've been toying with this idea myself. But I'm not very good at drawing in 2D. I've thought about importing real pictures of window displays and putting them in the windows, but photorealistic pics may not look good with the cartoonish look of RCT3. But maybe with the help of filters in photoshop....hmmmm.

That is looking pretty good. I hope you take the time to make the files as small as possible (poly optimized). It would be a shame to be only able to look at it, and not play a park with them.

The mermaids in the windows are animatronic. Not from Amerstdam. This is not Disney's Red Light District!!!:p

I'm doing my best to optimize the poly counts, but these are going to be more complex then the typical scenery pieces that ship with RTC3. Lag may be a problem for those with slow machines. I won't really know until others test these out.

But what I've noticed is the pieces with the highest counts disappear quickly as the camera is moved away. That usually clues me in that I'm pushing the limit and I try to make adjustments. I'm sure this feature was added to help with lag on slower machines. This only happens after Soaked is installed, I believe. I'm hoping this will keep lag at a minimum.

Wonder World is on hold right now. But expect BIG renovations, now that I can create custom scenery. Phase 4 will begin with a complete rehall of Circus Center using custom circus theming.

And here's the latest pics of the Main Street Set. I had to re-do all the base moulding pieces to make them more versatile. Plus, the scaling was off. Also... some new windows.

And i'm thinking of Hotels and Resorts, the balconies and windows are great for this kind of thing.... I see the future of RCT2 Hotels coming soon after the release of this pack.

I was thinking, I have the color chart for a block of mainstreet buildings at Disneyland and a chart of 2 blocks for the Magic Kingdom. It would actually be pretty neat for somebody to base the scenery off from that. Of course it would be really cool if somebody could make facade parts that actually produce light like the penny arcade facade.

This is coming along quite nicely, love the awnings above the windows and the rooftop windows that you have added, gives it a very decent Disney feel.
I was wondering if you could throw in a couple of decent Fence railings, like the kind that goes round city parks, and a picket fence? these have been left out of the RCT3 on release and replaced wth some really naff generic fences that probably no-one uses!

Otherwise, keep up the good work, and try to take your times to get as much done as you can.... no rush mate.

As for fences, there are none planned for the first pack, and I really don't have time for requests right now. But there's a very good possibilty they'll be included in subsequent packs. There WILL be one scenery element that can be used as a fence or railing that will be included in this pack. Can anyone guess what that will be? ;)

I just wanted to show you guys one problem with this pack. There's something in the RCT3 engine that causes small pieces with higher polygon counts to disappear as the camera moves back. Unfortunately, this happens with many of the pieces in this pack. (Just like Cafeen's letters)

The only way around this seems to be to make flat walls with 2D images on them. Since I'm lousy at drawing 2D images, my packs will all probably suffer a little from this "feature". There are ways to minimize this, which I will try my best to do in future packs.

Just a thought...Is there a way to shut off this feature? Maybe in the Options.txt file???

Yeah, same with my old brand name design, but you still can tweak to reduce number the polygons then.
As you have some very high smooth curve, maybe try to reducing the smooth to half then you will get half total of the polygons the curve faces.

Fewer than 300 polygons are safer.

I am planning to re-create EVERY section of Disneyland with custom scenery! (Unless I die of old age before I'm finished.)

Seriously, I plan on re-creating Disneyland, circa 1955. That's just a plan. Don't know if I'll actually do it all. My short term goal is to at least finish Main Street.

Shyguy- The dissappearing scenery is due to a lack of a '2D' replacement for the 3D object. The game uses the Geometry Imposter distance setting in the game options to determine when to swap higher count with lower count objects (or sprites- flat 2D renderings).

You could set the GID to a higher level, though you would see more lag. Somehow, the sets need the other version of the object - I don't know how that would be done, but that is the answer to the disappearing objects.

I believe a lot of the disappearing scenery issues are caused because I dont fully understand the SceneryItemVisual data and all the numbers in it, so the numbers arent right. (although I could be wrong and there could be code that is making it disappear after a certain distance)

EDIT: I have observed that the Terrain Cap Blocks from Soaked! dont disappear or change geometry (i.e. to less-complex form) no matter how far out you zoom.
Maybe I can copy the SceneryItemVisual settings from that and use it in the importer instead of the settings I am using now.

Vodhin and jonwil,

Thanks for your input. I figured it was looking for a lower res version of the pieces to swap as the camera moved away. It would be nice if there was a workaround to this, or a way to disable the feature. Perhaps a way to import a 2D sprite via jonwil's software, but then again, who wants to create 2 versions of each scenery piece...

so pretty much you are going to make disney land from scratch with help from acouple of actual rct pieces.

If you pull this off i will scream so loud. thats insane. I hope this gets finished.

Go to the ingame options then click on the picture of the eye. Then click on, i think its called "LOD options" or something like that. Then you can set the draw distance :)

It helps a little bit...

They are already less complex forms- only 6 sides are actually needed... the only change that might happen is a replacement of the texture... but that's unlikely...

Shyguy- the set looks fantastic. I wouldn't worry too much about the disappearing thing. Am I right in observing that you have created a window that embeds into the wall seperately? that's a neat idea!

Hey ShyGuy, looking good as always, ben following this thread for a while now,,,,, the last post with the creens shows the missing pieces, i would worry too much abt it really, the pack is good nonetheless! It's hardly a negative point about it! Actually come to think of it, you should consider yourself lucky, my graphics are C***, i dont even get 'Decent' water, its like a really wierd blue!

Anyway, on point, you really seriously considering doing a pack for every area in Disney? Alice in Wonderland? The Castle? TommorowLand? FrontierLand etc?

Would it be better to release a pack per area? Otherwise the list for this pack would be HUMOngous!

Nonetheless, keep up the good work mate and take your time!

I think that's about right. ;)

I originally intended to make parts to attach to existing scenery pieces, as the earlier pics of the Emporium showed. But, as you can see in the latest shots, there are almost no original RCT3 scenery pieces left. When and IF I get to Frontierland and Adventureland, I may incorporate more of RTC3's pieces, as they are better suited to those themes. We'll see.

I've done that, and does help a small bit, but then it gets to a point that no matter now far out you set the LOD options, it makes no difference.

The first level display windows are set out a tiny fraction from the other wall pieces and the in game glass walls are placed behind them. I still haven't been able to get my own glass surfaces to work properly. So this is the best workaround I've come up with. You just need some trim piece above the display windows to hide the seam between them and the other normally alligned walls.

Yes, I am considering doing a pack for every land. Actually, it may be several packs per land.

Don't worry, they won't all be in one super humongous pack. I wouldn't want to crash anyone's computer. The Main Street Pack is nearing completion and will be released shortly. This will be only the first Main Street pack. There will be several others as I complete each section of Main Street.

And to everybody. This project is extremely ambitious and I'll admit right now that I may not finish a tenth of what I plan to do. But I'll keep going as long as I have the time and interest to do it. The reality of this is that it will probably take years to finish! But it won't be the first artistic project I've worked on that took years to accomplish. So I just might do it. I may take several breaks in between packs, and we all might grow old watching this take shape. I also don't want to neglect my original park, Wonder World either, which I have ambitious plans for as well. So, no promises, but you can expect at least a few scenery packs from me, at the very least. I guarantee that. ;)

Because your going to be recreating Disneyland (1955), with basicly custom scenery, are you planning on making a Sleeping Beauty Castle pack? That would be so awesome!

I'm already having nightmares just thinking about that! Seriously, Fantasyland will be perhaps the hardest to make. The angles of the buildings will be impossible to do in RCT3. I will have to radically change the shape of the whole land, which I hate to do, but will have no choice.

As for the castle, there is already an alpha version of WDW's castle made be MaxInfinity that is breathtaking. I may use that pack to do it, or at least parts of it and add pieces specifically designed for Sleeping Beauty Castle. I will need to get his permission to use his textures first. Also, he seems to have disappeared from the forums, so I don't know if he plans on returning and finishing his pack or not. If he never returns, then I guess his unfinished pack is up for grabs.

But for now, Fantasyland is a long ways off, so I will make no guarantee that I'll even get to it. So please don't hold your breath waiting for me to make the castle. :p

I think I read somewhere that MaxInfinity had some serious computer problems, but was back. Hopefully he'll be able to pick up where he left off.

shyguy, even if you can't find a way around the draw distance, I would be honored to use your work in a park...it's that good.

Hopefully as more and more people learn the in's and out's of object making someone might be willing to help out on this project and shoulder some of the load.

I think you are wrong, cos I have no problem with that even some of my texture are 2x2 pixels or 512x512 that it work all the distance, but I have notice it if the model have lotta smooth curve, es. the high smooth 3D letters will getting disappear on the far distance.

So I have 2 version for model and both are look just the same and use the same textures, but only the different is number of polygons, one is about 1000 polygons, and other is about 400 polygons, the scenery showed me that the large of number polygons is invisible on the short distance than the 400 one

shyguy
10-17-2005, 12:06 PM
iceatcs,

Yes, I agree it's the polygons. And anything with curved surfaces disappears the quickest. Arches and spheres are the worst. When I used little spheres to cap the posts on the roof railing, it disappeared when I moved the camera a very short distance. Then, I replaced the spheres with diamonds, and now the railing is pretty stable. The same goes for all the arched windows. They all disappear pretty quickly. The fix would be to not use true arches, like I did in the doorway pieces.

The Main Street Set is almost ready for release. But in the meantime, as this set is a little complex and works a bit differently than others, I thought I'd put up the first of a few mini tutorials I plan to post.

Tutorial 1 - The Display Window

All the pieces in this set are treated as 1/4 tile items. This provides great versatility, but makes using it different from what you're used to. The walls won't pop onto the grid. You'll have to move them there and use the Z key to position them where you want them.

To build a first floor display window, you need to position the Display Window piece on the far side of the grid lines. Then the base moulding pieces will fit on the front side of the grid. (Which would typically be on the pathway. There's no collision detection, so all pieces can go anywhere you want.)

http://img455.imageshack.us/img455/9977/tut18su.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The Display Window is in place. I have placed each of the base moulding pieces in front to show you what they look like.

http://img455.imageshack.us/img455/5950/tut26wg.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Here is the assembled base moulding. You may need to use the Z key to orient some of them correctly. Next, I have laid out the brick pieces.

http://img455.imageshack.us/img455/6940/tut39xq.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Now the brick pieces are in place. Next, an awning would look nice and the glass wall that comes with RCT3 will be used.

http://img455.imageshack.us/img455/1268/tut46jh.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I have placed the glass wall on the same space as the Display Window. This is the only way to put glass in your windows for now. Glass textures don't import well, so this is the only workaround I've been able to come up with.

That's it.

I'll have some more coming soon....

I have some playtesting to do, and fix the prices and then it should be ready. I hear there may be a snag with getting custom scenery to work with Wild!:sour:. I wanted to make sure it worked okay with Wild! but now I may release it first, and then release a second version, if needed, to be compatible with Wild! I hear Jonwil is already planning on working on this problem. Hopefully, all custom scenery will be able to work with all expansions.

My concern is that if Jonwil has to make an importer that works for Wild!, will new scenery packs be backwards compatible with Soaked and the original RCT3??? Things could get messy...

As long as you're using the newest version of Jonwil's importer v12.1 it should be just fine with the Wild! expansion. It's just some of the older scenery packs that were made with the older versions of the importer that seem to be having issues.

Well, it seems like the Main Street Set will be okay with Wild!. And with a little work the others will be updated as well. Which brings us to...

Tutorial 2 - Second Floor

http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/2595/tut18qh.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The first floor wall is assembled and I have set out the first group of pieces that will be the start of the 2nd floor.

http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/8558/tut22ue.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
There you have it.

http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/7981/tut31rp.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I've added some more bricks.
Now, the Emporium signs are a bit quirky. They were designed to fit my Empoorium model and some are offset a little to the right or a little to the left. The "Books" sign is nicely centered, so I used it for our one-wall tutorial.

http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/6925/tut45ld.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Now for the cornice pieces. There are 2 main pieces here and the 2 corner pieces. Using the Z key and Ctrl key to get things lined up and at the right height make things easier.

http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/8262/tut56mr.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Now we have a 2 story building.

Next, we'll look at the roof...

Tutorial 3 - The Roof

http://img491.imageshack.us/img491/7631/tut14au.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Here we have a mini Emporium, waiting for its roof. The sign is offset, due to its placement in my model. I may make another that is centered for more versatile use.

http://img491.imageshack.us/img491/5584/tut28ql.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Here are the main roof pieces. The corners and the center. I've staggered them to show you them more clearly.

http://img491.imageshack.us/img491/5387/tut35ws.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The roof caps go on next. There is the straight cap and the corner caps.

http://img491.imageshack.us/img491/411/tut46xg.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The roof trim pieces look odd until they are placed. Here they are before placement. There are straight, corner, and various end pieces to choose from.

http://img491.imageshack.us/img491/8079/tut55fn.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Just place them inside the main roof pieces and there you have it.

http://img491.imageshack.us/img491/8721/tut61or.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
At this point, I noticed my walls were set forward instead of backset (behind the grid line), just proving how even I can get confused using my own set. Here is the proper placement. You can see the difference, especially in how the brick pieces stand out more. Of course, there's no reason you couldn't do it the other way too, if you wanted to.

http://img491.imageshack.us/img491/7393/tut72vv.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Lastly, I placed the dormers and the roof railing, which is all pretty easy. Ta-da!!

Tutorial 4 - Interiors

http://img468.imageshack.us/img468/1083/tut10pi.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Here we have an empty building.

http://img468.imageshack.us/img468/2229/tut29fh.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
First, place the wainscotting around the bottom.

http://img468.imageshack.us/img468/6553/tut34al.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Next, place the paneling above the wainscotting. This creates a 4H interior wall.

http://img468.imageshack.us/img468/597/tut46sy.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Next, the ceiling trim.

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/2065/tut56jc.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Now, you can place a food stand or vendor inside. Use the interior pieces to encase it.

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/4188/tut63ol.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The corner plug pieces make things look more finished. I've place each one in front by itself so you can see them better.

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/7117/tut79ar.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Now I've placed the ceiling/roof pieces.

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/7139/tut82hl.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
They're called that because they have a nice pattern on the underside and can be used for interior ceilings, or roofs, or both.

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/540/tut94ks.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
A few more pieces to finish things off.

This is the last of the tutorials. The set should be ready for release in a day or two!

Main Street Set is released!

This has not been tested with Wild! yet, but it should work, as I've used the latest version of jonwil's importer. Please let me know asap if there are any problems. This set isn't perfect.

Read the tutorial on making roofs. The trim pieces are just trim only and have to be combined with the roof piece.

Like Pumper, I also haven't been around as much as I used to and this is the first time I've seen this scenery pack. What an incredible job you've done, Shyguy. At least 19 or 23 's , easy!

Not just all the detailed exterior elements, but the way you've assembled interior pieces so we can make real, working buildings, not just pretty scenery - well, that just puts it over the top.

That's one heck of a lot of work, pulled off beautifully. I always thought, given your talent for building those cardboard models, that creating custom scenery would suit you to a T. Excellent job!

WOW!! I love this pack!

The only problem I have is the drawdistance. Whenever I zoom out beyond a few inches, the items disappear. It's an annoying little problem. It's not my game. I have my drawdistance set around 700.

Take a look: http://rapidshare.de/files/7112629/main_street_disappears_.wmv.html

**This too happens to my table set, but only if you zoom very far away, not a few inches.

Objects with high polygon counts will disappear quickly, and many of the pieces in this set have high polygon counts. Anything with curved surfaces or arches are the worst. I will try to keep this to a minimum in the second Main Street Set.

Supercon007,

I would try re-installing the set. Maybe it's not intalled right or maybe the file was corrupted on download. If nothing works, tell me what error message you are getting. Then I ,or someone smarter than me who's reading this, might be able to help.

I think it might just be an error with the 2 color settings. These should only have 1 color change I think, so your set should be ok. We'll let shyguy answer it for sure though.

Greetings!

Fan-freakin'-tastic set Shyguy (you're head must be getting pretty big with all this gushing over your set).

I hope someone will hookup with you on the 2-D imposters aspect so we can get a better draw distance. Come on out there, must be someone that can help with that! Unfortunately. I'm not that person as I have no artistic abilities. :(

I was glad to see you say that you'll be adding more interior pieces (hopefully paneled window, door and display window pieces). On that note, I noticed that there seems to be a 1H panel piece above the stall in your interiors tutorial and I couldn't find it in the released pack? I sure miss that one too.

Your scenery set is so much more than just a great set though. It's also your incredibly flexible implementation. I hope Frontier will take notice and modify the collision detection especially with placing paths on either side of a piece. It would be nice to see an option to allow a scenery piece to break a path or not (IOW, to allow peeps to pass through a scenery piece or not to facilitate passing through doorway pieces but not windows or walls). Your nesting of pieces to add the trim is also a cool idea that should be adopted. And the double sided walls is another great idea, allowing for separate interior and exterior configurations. You've really opened my eyes with a whole new realm of possibilities. And, you've raised the bar quite a bit for Frontier and other scenerists too!

I'll be waiting for Main Street part 2 with great anticipation.

P.S. Great tutorial too, Vodhin!

Heh, it's ok.

There are still a few things I guess you still need to tweak and fix:D

For one, I noticed then when you go to add roof pieces, and I understand that these are done by quarter tiles, but you have to put your cursor over a completely different tile to place the roof piece/pieces on a certain tile. Gets very frustrating :p

And I also notice that the one, 3-windowed..Window (the Window that does not come with its own wall) Is set too far back and disappears behind a wall when you move away from it. Like I said, maybe you could set it a bit more forward or make it a bit thicker:up:

Fanie- the roof tiles 'hinge' on the corner of the grid square. Depending on the orientation of the building itself, the piece rotates around this point and may appear to be over a different square. The Tripple Window is a piece that sticks to the wall, so if your wall is on the same side of the gridline as the window, it 'sinks in' to the wall. just place the wall on the other side of the gridline. See my little tutorial in the link in my signature, it may help. :)

-[A.S] Fanie-
11-03-2005, 10:44 PM
I did that, but it still disappears. I even have the draw distance for scenery set as far as it will go :(

Vodhin
11-03-2005, 11:00 PM
Oh- I see... yes that piece does disappear unless you are pretty close to it. Draw distances don't affect this piece since there is no 'replacement' lower poly-count piece that the game would switch to. If you want to know what I'm talking about, the best object to see this transition is the 3-D Cinema. Place one and slowly zoom away and you'll see it switch between 3 different versions (Assuming your draw distance is around normal levels).

Oh, and BTW: That's one fantastic building you made, [A.S.] Fanie!

Shyguy, I have an idea on that: What if you made a wall with a picture of that window on it as a texture? When zoomed out, the piece would simply disappear and you'l see the wall version behind it?

shyguy
11-03-2005, 11:35 PM
The Triple Window has the highest ploygon count of all the pieces because of the arched outter frame AND the inner frame. It was one of the first pieces I did before I realized how quickly polygon counts rise. If this was going to be the only Main Street Set I released, I'd go back and fix it. But since there will be more coming, you can expect the newer sets to be a little more polished and with fewer glitches like that. You will soon have many more windows to choose from and for those who are bothered by the disappearing problem, you can just avoid using the Triple Window. If things go the way I plan, you'll have more windows than you'll know what to do with...

Witward
11-03-2005, 11:46 PM
yay. I must say shy guy, i love this set, The possibilities of new scenary to be made is endless, i would be happy if the only thing you did for the next 2 years was make main street scenary, your set got me looking at pictures of the main street shops and restraunts, and you can seriously spend alot of time recreating scenary from those shops, i cant wait to see whats coming next. Mabey in a year or two, when ever you get done with this set you could make the cinderela castle, i know there was a set that was made but got kinda half way done and i havnt sean anything new on that for like 2 months, so mabey in the late future you could take on this giant task. I would friggen pay good money for that. any way your awesome keep up the good work

shyguy
11-04-2005, 01:54 AM
Witward,

I most probably WILL spend the next 2 years making Main Street Scenery. There's a LOT of buildings on Main Street!

I would like to make scenery for the other lands as well. As long as I don't burn out, I will continue to persue this.

MaxInfinity was working on the Cinderella Castle. He was away, but he's back now, to a limited extent, and he DOES plan to finish the set. I will NOT build that castle, as it's in WDW. I have tentative plans on building Sleeping Beauty Castle, from Disneyland. I may use pieces of his set along with my own to create that castle. I've already briefly discussed this with him.

And now a question for you guys...

I'm trying to keep the disappearing problem to a minimum, as you know. Small objects with high polygon counts disappear very quickly as you move the camera away. Full size wall pieces with decorative windows are pretty stable. But what I want to do is create the windows as objects by themselves so they can be inserted into any wall piece you want.

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/3535/window15vo.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Here is the window piece with some various wall pieces behind. I've attached the window to an "anchor" wall piece, which lessens the disappearing problem.

http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/2738/window27yb.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Here, I've placed the window piece inside (nested) the other wall pieces. Oops. The rustic wall must be a little thicker than the others, but this window doesn't exactly fit that theme anyway.

The advantages of this method are increased veratility and 3 colorable areas on the window itself.

The disadvantage is it still disappears. The anchor wall helps a lot. Without the anchor wall, the windows disappeared very quickly. Almost as bad as the Triple Window. With the anchor wall, you can move back about twice as far before it disappears. It's almost as if the frontmost surfaces melt away, leaving the basic wall (the one it is nested in) showing only.

The other way I could do this is to create each wall with it's own window in place. The advantage to this is it almost eliminates the disappearing problem.

The disadvantages are lack of versatility and you can only color 2 areas of the window. The wall color gets the first color and the window gets the other 2. But in my opinion, the windows need 3 colors...The outer frame, the inner frame, and the curtains.

So do you guys have any opinions or preferences? I think the versatility of the first option outweighs its limitations. What do you think??

Hey, i have a question, how about the buildings weve allready saved with mainstreet pack 1.0, will there be an error when i open parks with mainstreet building, or can i just continue working on them after installing 1.1

They'll be fine. If you used the Doorway piece, it will be fixed when you load up your saved park.

what program are you using to make your pieces? I want to get into doing some scenery and have both milkshape and blender.

Shyguy- I think you may be on to something: The draw distance may include not only the poly count, but the size of the object as well? This had me wondering and now I remember a little trick that Frontier is using for the coaster car wheels.

If you paid attention to the early screenshots (when installing the game) you see that they had 6 sided "nut" looking wheels. Now if you look closely, the wheels are made out of a sandwich of 2D wheel images. The fine details of your windows might benefit from the same treatment?

Iceatc discovered (or at least was the first to show) tranparent window textures. I'm thinking that if you made a full wall tranparent and then anchor your solid windows on them, you would then get the best of both worlds.

And now for a brain fart: What if the curtains were seperate items, a 2D piece for interior walls? This would allow a normal wall with window in place that could either be open to show the interior or you could place a curtain behind it. You could also put the curtains behind any window of the same size...

I really like that idea vodhin. I do wish we had a curtain piece.

ShyGuy - This stuff is beautiful.
I just got Wild and haven't been able to download your stuff yet, but it's amazing. And it's just as cool to see the nice work others are doing with it.
Your idea for separating the windows from walls is Brilliant! I wish the shade/delineation of the window trim was better. Personally, one color for the frame and one for the lintel is just fine.
Vohdin also brings up and excellent point about making curtains a separate object as well.
Keep up the incredible work. I look forward to someday creating a masterpeice of my own with your objects.
Thanks!

The only problem right now is the lag, because of the amount of detailed pieces:confused:

Open the folder that you placed in the style/themed folder and there should be another folder containing the scenery. Take that folder out, delete or move the folder you originally put in there, then put the folder, with the pieces in there...

If that makes sense...

I've played around with transparent objects, with poor results. I don't think you can import an object with some parts transparent and others not. It's all or nothing.

These are good ideas, but they present problems of their own. If the windows are open, then they can't be placed on existing walls. You would see the wall texture inside the window. (See the pic above with the window on the western rustic wall)

So, I could make a 3 color wall with open window, no glass. Then a curtain piece by itself. I don't think the small curtain piece would disappear, since its polygon count would be very low. But with this method, you won't get a versatile window that can be placed in other walls. And also, the Main Street windows are all different sizes so I'd have to make a separate curtain piece for each one. Gonna have to think some more on this...

This is truly an amazing display of artististry. I thought the building looked great before you added the scenery, but now it looks truly amazing and as close to life as you can get. It is great that you decided to create a set based on Main Street USA at disneyland. As well, I noticed that many of these pieces are compatible, not only with that specific building, but with all Main Street buidings. And, we finally get an American Flag to put inside our parks.

Bravo ShyGuy, I take my (metaphorical) hat off to you.

I finally got to play around with this set!!! It is so perfect...so versatile! My favorite pieces are the balcony and the dormers...and the trim...and the windows...and the roofs...and the roof rails...and...oh you get the idea!!!

I've been secretly wanting to bring my RCT2 Victorian sets into RCT3 but I don't know the first thing about all this fancy 3D and texturing business. Your set is perfection! You brought that wonderful Victorian "Gingerbread" into RCT3! THANK YOU SHYGUY!!! :D :D :D :D (plus you saved me from having to figure all this stuff out...I've had peeps asking me to create my Victorian stuff for RCT3...but I just don't have the knowledge or spare time to tackle something like that!)

Did I mention I really like the door too?

Hey, have you thought about making a big clock to make a clock tower out of? How about some arches and lattices?

I was wondering about that flag too...but I searched and figured out where peeps are getting it. It is on top of the Hershey's Kissing Tower ride from Soaked...they are just sinking the entire tower down under ground! Funny, huh?

tomoos,

You still have too many folders, I think. Under the "Themed" directory, you should have a folder called "shy-Main Street Set." When you open that folder, you should have 2 files ("style.common.ovl" and "style.unique.ovl") and one more folder called "shy-Main Street Set". Click on that folder and you should have all the .ovl files.

If you have an extra folder in this sequence, it's not going to work and you'll get those error messages.

If you open the first folder and there's another one inside (#2) and then another inside that, with the 2 files and 3rd folder, remove folder #2 and all its contents and copy it into the "Themed" directory. Remove the original extra folder.

^yea...:p

EDIT: The close up flag is the top of the observation tower ride (I think) just sunk into the ground :)
