Ok a lot of guys are still having trouble with the basics of creating scenery. so i've made a video, the first part is finished it shows you how to create a standard wall piece and texture it in 3d studio. there will be more to come, the only problem is I need a server to store the files on and a free one at that, the first video is about 140mb, so i'll probably need a gig of space. If anyone wants to host these files or knows someone that will let me know

Part 1 wall creation and texturing in 3d studio max

Part 2 Importing your object into RCT3

Part 3 ? what ever is wanted most

Part 4 ? same as 3 etc etc.. and so on

Skip/Marn I hope this is the right place for this, I did think about putting in media section But as its to do with custom scenery I thought here would be best, but if you would rather it in media, please move.

Thanx

Congrats Marn, you'll make a great Mod.

I'll certainly watch this!

I need a few custom walls for my OoT Park, so it'll be helpful. Looking forward to it.:)

Thanks Max, This is the right place for this. This is a very good idea, too bad the video's are so large. That'll be rough on people with dial-up.

the size I quoted was unzipped etc, so hopefully I'l be able to halve that.

Fantastic! I'll see if I can pursuade Tikitiki to host them (which won't take much knowing him... :p).

I deffiantly want to watch this, I once compressed a full video with narattion, the video was 44mins long top quality, totaled 475meg, but using winrar at best compression I got it down to 10meg, 475meg to 10meg, also, with a 36meg video, again using winrar at best compression settings I got it down too 125kb!

I can't get these video files small enough without losing the quality, so I got a couple more idea's.

one is to create them on DVD and send them to peeps who want them (you'll have to supply the blank and send a SAE though) otherwise it could end up costing me a fortune.

the other is to hold a live tutorial class in the chat room.
for this we would need a temp chatroom for one evening and time we all agree on, say we said tommorow @ 7pm gmt(thats just an example I'm not suggesting we do it then) then we get everyone who wants to join, in the room by 10 to 7, then we lock the room so no one can come in after the tutorial has started.
And we'll just go through the proccess step by step till everyone has it.

mods will have to let me know if this would be possible.

thanx

Hey

Whats the problem with the video sizes? if its anything related to hosting and/or bandwidth give me a shout via PM and I will sort you out with some space to put them on. Ive got more than enough bandwidth to handle these ;)

thanx mike

hosting's not a problem tikitiki has offered to host them, I was just thinking about d/l times. The one Ive done is very basic but its 183 meg the more complex ones could be 4 times that.
Thanx for the offer though I still may take you and tikitiki up on it, we'll see what people think.

Since a d/l issue is a function of internet speed and patience, I'd say upload for those of us with high-speeds and patience, and everyone else can do the CD/DVD thing.

Just my 2 cents.:)

I sure would like to know THAT secret. I made a video of a Go Kart lap that is 52.1 megs packing it as a zip the size was still 52.1 mb. The only way I know to make a video smaller is to change the bit rate, lowering the quality.

Could you break them up into chapters or something?

MaxInfinity

wouldn't make any difference you would still have to d/l 183mb in 3 parts instead of 1.

and I agree with skipper the best I can do is zip it which takes it to 150mb, if I try to compress with different video formats the quality drops too much, and you cant see what I'm typing in the boxes.

Edit

Ok guys, I have had a few offers from some of the kind peeds on these forums, to host some files for me.

I'm currently uploading the max gothic theme and my 1st video tutorial to a very nice 2 gig of space @ neopian.co.uk provided for me by NeoPuma/Matt
Tikitikitiki Has also offered to host the files so hopefully I can get the files there aswell.
be aware the video file is a 150mb file. if anyone wants to try and compact this down without loss of quality, your more than welcome.
As soon as the files are uploaded and I have checked the links I will post them, I'll also try and give you some idea of d/l times.

Here's the link Max's Stuff (http://rcttuts.mirrors.neopian.co.uk/)

I just did a d/l test, I have a 10mb broadband connection and it takes roughly 5-6 mins to d/l the 155mb file, you should be able to work out your own d/l times from that

I hate when people post just to say the link doesn't work.

Oh by the way, the link doesn't work.

Sorry guys, my bad. I have switched servers at the moment, just getting things back up and running. I have pm'ed max to help sort the problem out with me. They will be back A.S.A.P - Don't panic!

I like the idea with the tutorial on DVD very much. To hold your costs to a limit, you can open an paypal-account. Anyone who want the DVD can pay on this account. Off course you must add the costs for paypal, but that isn't too much and you must add the costs for the shipping to the DVD-price.

Before anyone cries, I don't want or can't pay for a video-tutorial, think about that you also have paid for the program and the add-ons (if you have them). And not anything should be free. I think, that the objects of MaxInfinity are more worth as you have paid for e.g. for Wild.

And as a little bonus MaxInfinity could add some custom Scenery on this DVD that you only can get on this way.

That is just a bad idea that is forcing you to buy a DVD just to get a free custom scenery pack. Seems all you want is to get money, which is always very selfish.

That aside, I do like the idea of a tutorial video, I could hopefully understand how to make my own scenery

It was just an idea because of the size of the files. I would not dream of charging anyone for anything I do, it simply would have ment sendinding a blank dvd and a stamped self addressed envelope. this idea has been dropped anyway. so you'll have to d/l them when I get time to sort them out.

What would you do, if Atari gives any of the scenery-creators a well-donated job and you must buy all the custom scenry in official packs. See it as a donation to honour their work. All they only get here are some warm "Thank You". Nobody really honoured what they do for us. I have tried my first steps to make custom scenery and I see how many time it needs to made one perfect object. I think it's not fair, to say "all they want is to get money". I don't want to made a big discussion here. As MaxInfinty wrote, he will publish his project for download, but I think, this should be said and maybe you think about it, if you download the latest custom scenery set.

That aside, I do like the idea of a tutorial video, I could hopefully understand how to make my own scenery

Maybe you understand it better, when you have tried this by yourself.

See how far you get in life not making money. What was being proposed at the time was that you pay only for the blank DVD and the postage. If you ask me complaining about paying for that is selfish since he wasn't asking you to pay him for his time or effort just for the supplies he would use to give you the product of his labor.

That is called breaking even not making money. There is nothing selfish about being paid for your talent and time it is very generous that many here give those things away for free.

This reminds me of the live content in “Wild!”, a couple of people hated the idea of allowing their game to connect to the internet and download some ads to be used in the game. They say it is spyware, and said that they were being forced to use it, just so they could complete an objective.

I am not saying the DVD should be free, but I think it is a little harsh placing exclusive custom scenery on it. I know not everyone will buy it, but for those that did, they will be able to use this new scenery in their parks, and when it comes to sharing they could only do it with other people who brought the DVD.

As the DVD idea is out now, there is no need for any more arguments.

Hey Max- I think I can solve your video tutorial problem!

When I made my ASE tutorial, I realised that it would be huge. I then realised that if I just used still shots mostly, I could have great resolution and a small file, since compression os a still image would be really tiny.

So, use video footage where needed and insert still images when you need to show what to type. I was able to "animate" the images by simply fading between different versions of the same shot.

Hope this helps!

(PS, I'm willing to mirror your videos, too, as more mirrors means better availability to all)

Thanx vodhin, I may try that.

reading through the threads gives the impression that I've asked for money for something, if the threads are read carefully this is not the case but if you just flick through them it does sound like that, so just to clear things up.

the idea was that because some of the files would be huge, that if people had slow connections they could send a blank dvd in a stamped self addressed envelope, and I would send the disc back to them with the tutorial videos on, the video's would still be available for download for people with fast connections.
There would not have been any exclusive custom scenery content on the disc just the video files.
Everything I do or make for rct, is free, has always been free, and will always be free, site owners are welcome to publish any of my content on their sites, without having to ask me first, although it is nice to be asked.
I hope this clears things up, and as I stated before the disc idea has been dropped.

And here's another freebie for you, its an excel worksheet that calculates the icon positions, dependant on the size of the icon.png file you enter, thought it might be useful. I've wrote them on paper 3 times now and lost them, so I just wrote this vb script. hope you find it useful
