I have said all along when it comes to scenery, there are those within the community I am humbled by their mighty talents.

But as I have stated, RCT3 is not dead by a longshot. The work like this will make the platform live well beyond its intended lifespan and this type of contributions by great talents is what adds great value to the platform.

Hopefully in the future Frontier will provide true importing for the community...But until now we have great people like Shyguy, Max, MNM Jcat, Battor and many others.

Beeeeg Cheers:up:

Tips for using the Main Street Set 2

The second Main Street set will have some good stuff, but will also be just as complex as the first. I will begin posting some tips for this set in the following days, preceding its release.

http://img281.imageshack.us/img281/3164/awnings6nk.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
There are a lot a new small awnings in the set, but it may be confusing as to which one fits where.

#1 is the regular small awning that fits the new window.
#2 will be labeled "wall offset" (not slight offset) which will fit a wall that has been turned frontwards.
#3 is the double awning that fits the double window from the first set.
#4 is the raised awning that fits the original window in the first set.

More tips coming soon...

Hi ShyGuy, this is my first post here and I must say that your first set has made RCT3 very entertaining for me, I was curious tho, will you be making a roundell roof for the Disney buildings like that found on city hall and other mainstreet buildings?

also, here is my City hall using your add on....THANKS!

Love the new sills SG! Beautiful work there spookymufu. Can't wait to see what else you do with it.
By the way SG, I'm planning to use your set on my boardwalk section of my park. Of course, that won't be for a while, but I do plan on using it. Can't wait myself.
Thanks!

Really nice work, spookymufu.

"I was curious tho, will you be making a rounded roof for the Disney buildings like that found on city hall and other mainstreet buildings?"

Probably not. Rounded surfaces raise the polygon count pretty high. But I WILL make some more fancy roof pieces in a later set.

When is this pack going to be released? I am anxiously awaiting these awnings and windows for my Volks Platz.........yes, much like my RCT2 park, Phantasia, I am basing this one auf Deutschland...........it suits the adventure-some spirit, I hope to achieve with this work.

These pieces look so good I canít wait to they come out these pieces would of fit perfectly with the city I made ( My RCT3 city (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=501790)) but unfortunately I was done with it before even your first set came out but know with the edition of these knew pieces I might make a new RCT3 city or I am definitely making a new park featuring these sets.

To put it simply I think your scenery is defiantly some of the best custom scenery made for RCT3.

shyguy
11-28-2005, 05:02 PM
There are some pieces included in this set that are 1 1/2 tiles wide.

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/1350/anex7zz.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/9085/anex28uq.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Together, they form the Emporium Anex building.

I realize now that having pieces like this will make things even more complex, and this is part of the reason I have decided it would be nearly impossible to build Main Street exact. As I now continue with Main Street, I will make buildings based on the existing ones, not exact replicas.

So, I'm including these pieces in the pack. It is your choice whether or not to use them.

Complex? Perhaps...but I think it's adding some nice elements that are different than the ones based on the standard RCT3 'block', and that's a great thing. Not ever building has units that are all the same width or height, this adds some variety and helps break up a repeating pattern. I'm really glad you did these shyguy!

I may or may not do New Orleans. But, I will be refurbishing my Plantation Restaurant in Wonder World, which is Orleans themed. There will be several custom pieces designred for that. I'll do this a lot sooner than New Orleans Square.

I have seen you ask just about everybody for a sign for this, and most say that they need a front on pic. SO why don't you just use the billboards(if you have Wild!) or get a freakin front on pic! I am sure these guys don't like someone just coming in their thread, not even commenting on there work, and asking for a favor.

BTW-Why in the world do you need these signs for anyway?

Oh and shyguy.....That looks awsome! I love the pieces shown above. They acctualy give me a idea for a neat little beach town. Keep up the great! Masonite Siding......UM........lol

boardwalk?
you mean the sidewalks?

All I did was drop the road area with the ground lowering tool and then made ramps for the peeps to use and go where they want. Oh, I also did an under coat (paint) of cobblestone to give them the curb.

Fantastic job Spookymufu. As a huge Disneynut, it was really exciting to see Disneyland Main Street come to life like that.

And ShyGuy, I am amazed and humbled at what you are producing. I can only hope that you are getting paid to produce computer art in some form because you should be. What the community in general, and you in particular, are putting out is, in my opinion, superior to the tools provided to us in the game itself. Keep up the hard work and know that you've got another fan that looks forward to your updates.

(P.S. my fiance was blown away by your work as well)

I believe you have to place a normal footpath where you want the peeps to walk and then build the sidewalk pieces on top.

NO. They are similar, but have the Main Street wall texture, which is a lighter version of the walls that come with RCT3. The slanted walls in Wonder World match the RCT3 original walls (almost) and will be released with the Expo 3000 Set.

Great work Shyguy, but I have seemed to hit a problem. The first time I have ever had this happen. Your original set works great, but when I install set #2 into the theme folder, and start the game, when I go to select one of the objects, the game freezes, and I get a No svd: for :sid error. What am I doing wrong? I've got the update for Wild and everything, and I have un-installed it, and re-installed the set twice.
Could somebody please help the mentally challenged here.

While our copy of Main Street Scenery Pack #2 downloads, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the hard work and artistic energy you've lavished on both this new set and the original Main Street pack.

From the moment we installed Main Street 1, I've used at least one element from the pack in every single building I've designed. Not only is the modeling and texture work top-notch, the organization - the way in which you've subdivided and separated the various architectural elements - set a standard for versatility and effect that even Atari and Frontier have yet to match.

Thanks to your work, it's possible for all of us to acheive a level of interior and exterior architectural polish that was completely unattainable before. I'm eager to see what new possibilities Main Street 2 opens up.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

This is a very common problem that happens when you have unzipped it into too many folders. Check the heirarchy of the folders of the others sets and make sure it's the same with this one. Delete any extra folders.

the main folder should be placed in
X:\Program Files\Atari\RollerCoaster Tycoon 3\Style\Themed

so after it's installed you should have
X:\Program Files\Atari\RollerCoaster Tycoon 3\Style\Themed\shy-Main Street Set

with the three files inside that....

I don't know if anyone can help me, but I'll ask...

So I've to free download tihs amazing pack a couple of times now and the same thing happens. I choose free, I'm taken to the download page where I wait about twenty seconds, then it comes up, I type in the code, press start download, and the download box pops up and...

It will only save as an HTML file...

Just to see what its all about, I download it and open to find another rapidshare page saying at the bottom in german "Access code failed" and thats it...

It's very frustrating and I was wondering if anyone had a clue what could be wrong so I can get this awesome scenery set!

Edit: Thanks, Vodhin!

A few questions:

1) Do I need any of the expansion packs or will Shyguy's scenery pack work with RCT3, stand-alone?

2) I think I've loaded the pack correctly (placed shyguy's folder (the one without the underscores) in the themes directory) but I don't see his stuff when I load an already existing game. Do I need to start a new game? In Vodhin's tutorial, he has theme icons that I don't see. What's up?

I'm a real novice at this, please excuse my newbie questions. The stuff Vodhin does in 3 minutes would take me three days. :)

shyguy

jmatt,

1) You shouldn't need the expansions packs, to the best of my knowledge.

2) You have to start a new game with the scenario editor (or sandbox, I never use sandbox, so I'm not sure). New scenery will not appear in already existing parks. You can move your file into the "Start New Scenario" directory and then open it in the Scenario Editor. Go to the inventions category and add all the new scenery to your park.

As long as it's installed in the right place, it'll show up in a sandbox park with all the other scenery.

Oh boy, I can't wait to download this pack Shyguy. Do you have any teaser pics. to show us? If not, then i guess i'll just have to wait!!!!!!!!  BTW, Do you do custom objects for individual people? If so, I only have a request for 2 things, and i don't really think that these 2 would be that hard to design/create. If you'd like to know what these 2 things are you can email me to find out!

BTW, Do you do custom objects for individual people?

I think, non of the creators here take requests for individual objects. If the creator do some objects for you, they "must" do also some objects for any other. And then, he didn't have the time to complete his own works. But that's my opinion.

You should request your scenery-wants here on this board.

Those are just trim pieces. Place them "inside" regular roof pieces to add the trim.

So what's next on the agenda for Disneyland 1955 Shyguy? Are you done with Mainstreet?

Very nice looking set, but it looks like the largest hog set as well. Your files (walls, etc) are like 150k to 690k+ each. Atari files are only 1k-24k. I would assume just one small building would be like 45MB, so 10 buildings would be 450MB of memory required (NOT including the game or other rides/scenery). I would say WDW setup would be well over 20GB of memory required.
You seriously need to dramatically cut down the size of the files.

wabigbear
12-10-2005, 03:27 PM
That's mostly true computertech82, I'm not sure the answer is that shyguy needs to revamp the file sizes, but instead is that we may have to be more selective with where we use the pieces. I've been using them extensively in my park. They look gorgeous. But I'm going to have to remove them in order to have a functioning park...or to even be able to finish working on this one. It's a shame, but these are proving too rich for my blood.

I'm going to have limit usage to one or two buildings, and that's about killing me!

This issue has already been addressed and I've warned players that these sets have high polygon counts. I've spent countless hours making these and generously offer them to you guys for free. If they're too much for your computer, don't use them. But don't critisize what I've done, because frankly, you have no right to do so.

For what it's worth, as I get better with designing scenery, I'm learning more and more tricks to cut polygon counts and subsequent sets will be more manageable.

Shyguy's absolutely right,If you can't use it, then DELETE IT out of your system. If anyone can do better, then do it and STOP complaining about it. I use his Main Street Sceneries in my 130x250 sized park, and i don't have a problem at all with it. I can't design custom stuff myself, that's why i download other creators' scenery. I'm not complaining if something don't work, I'm patient enough to wait for the bugs to be worked out!!!!
Got your back Shyguy!! ;)

PS: If anybody's going to complain about the the game or scenery that anyone creates, then don't play the game, or don't download anymore scenery. These creators take alot of their time to design things for us to use in our parks, and really, THEY DON"T HAVE TO, NOW DO THEY?

ok guys before we start tearing chunks out of the guy, although he could have left out the "you need to seriously" part, there is a point to this, I never gave it a thought to check atari's file sizes when doing my own scenery, but after reading that thread I checked, while he is right in some respects, hes wrong in others.
some of atari's walls are 150kb and over, check the egyptian theme. I thought fine my plain walls are around 150k so I'm fine, then I checked a very plain atari wall bamboo 6.5kb, this leads me to believe that atari used some sort of compression on the files or maybe its the textures bumping the kb count. my plain walls are 12 polys and as anyone who does 3d knows you cant make a wall with any less, thats the absolute bare minimum, so why are my wall pieces 150k and ataris 6k. it must be the textures. I'm looking into it further.

Ok now you can tear him to pieces:D

shyguy
12-11-2005, 01:22 AM
I noticed the tiny file size on some of the walls too. Don't know how they kept it so low, either. But I'm working hard to keep my new scenery pieces much smaller. They won't be as detailed, but more people will be able to use them. What I'm hoping is RCT3 will be around for a long time, and computers will get more powerful. And as more people upgrade, the Main Street sets won't be so laggy. (And we can build bigger parks, and have fps over 2 at night, and......)

This can explain part of it...Notice the EDIT part:

The reason that scenery ovls made by us seem to end up bigger than the atari files is that atari used texture sharing to share textures (with only one copy of each texture and the other files referencing that texture). This feature is actually supported in my scenery importer and has been for a few versions now (but no-one actually seems to be using it). This means that only one copy of the texture is used and loaded into memory.

The way to use this in your own scenery (note that its perfectly ok to update existing scenery with this as long as you dont rename any scenery or change its size or something like that) is to load the texture into one ovl file.
Then, in the other ovl files that reference it, you add a reference.

If the ovl file with the scenery in it is called a.common.ovl and a.unique.ovl, you add the reference "a" to all the other ovl files.

Then, when selecting the texture for the model, instead of selecting it, you type its name in manually.
By doing this (and not actually loading the texture into all the ovl files), the game will only load one copy of the texture.

When picking what ovl file to put the texture into, pick one which has the least complex model and/or pick the one that is the most likely to be used when this set is used. (remember that anytime the ovl file with the texture is loaded, whatever 3d model is inside it will be loaded too)

EDIT:
Also, note that the exact way that I load stuff into the scenery ovls is different to how frontier does it.
In order to make valid size comparisons, you need to compare the size of both the .common.ovl and the .unique.ovl. Frontier puts stuff into the .common.ovl that I put into the .unique.ovl (the game still reads it all either way)

My walls are 19.5k not 155 as I stated I read the files wrong it was 155 bytes not kb the texture sharing should hopefully get these somewhere near ataris 5k

Thanx marne I spoke with jonwil and he explained this, I somehow missed the thread on texture sharing.

I thought it must be down to textures as my walls had the minimum polys, I just couldnt work out why, as my textures were around 65k for a 256x256, the same as ataris.
i thought just keeping the polys as low as possible would be enough but I was wrong

just remember guys, all the Custom scenery is experimental, CS makers have no guidelines, as atari/frontier is keeping very quiet on this.
We do our best, this will always be good enough for some people and not good enough for others, nothing will ever change that, but even atari has that problem. if it wasn't for people experimenting we would all still be living in caves and none of this would matter.

Armed with this new information, I have just figured out why my Main Street set is so laggy. It's not the polygon counts. It's the textures! I typically use anything from a 256x256 bitmap to a 1024x1024! (The later to get the lettering on my signs nice and crisp) I checked the file size of the signs and was shocked to see them over a meg!

The other dumb*ss thing I was doing was adding an alpha texture to EVERY piece! I just thought you had to fill in ALL the fields, all the time. This, in addition to the reference system, I just converted a 1 meg scenery piece into a 4.56 kb one!

So you guys should expect my next scenery packs to be much more manageable on lower end systems. (Higher end ones, for that matter.):D

That's fantastic news shyguy! But I don't think you should call anything you've done as "dumb*ss", because it certainly isn't...if Frontier would just help with custom objects there wouldn't be most of these problems.

If you cant find a texture you used you can use the texture dumper to extract the texture you used from the oval file.

Know if you donít want to redo the sets because of all the work involved I can understand that.

Thatís a real shame, but it will have its consequences. For those that suffer from the lag of them, they will be put off and only use the updated sets, while those that donít suffer from the lag will be using the older sets. Of course I may be over exaggerating, but I would really appreciate it if you did update your older sets, and if you did that you wouldnít have to create more sets as the older one will please all.

It's pretty funny (LOL) that you guys "bang" me but then turn around and agree (that's called a hyprocrite) . And I'm not criticizing the work, just the size. I like some of the sets that have been developed (like timber frame), but the size limited how many is to be used without driving the game down to 2fps. The size really does matter. I would love to have one of those Disney type parks, but be able to play it, not just look at it. Glad to see at least a few ppl reconize this.
I hope some of the older sets are redone. It would be great making full use of them in a large park.

computertech82,

We weren't disagreeing with you. Just reacting to the tone of your post. There are nicer ways of giving constructive criticism. (If that is what you were trying to do.)

The issues you brought up were already well known to myself and others, and I had already discussed them in earlier posts. I had already posted warnings about this and blamed it on my lack of experience with custom designing. We're all learning more and more as time goes by.

live_the_thrill,

I will probably go back and update the older packs eventually. But it will be some time, as I have 3 new packs I am also working on that need updating before they're released.

No one as you put it banged you, as shyguy stated people were warned of the high poly count, and its upto them if they use the set or not, you have to understand that cs is experimental, we dont have the information that frontier have so were working to the best we can, I for one was unaware of the filesize issue because I kept all my pieces to the minimum poly count, thinking that would suffice, I/we now no different I was unaware of the shared texture info as i missed jonwils thread.

I dont think the first line in your reply was needed, but your entitled to your opinion like everyone else.

But apart from that some good came out of your original thread, in the fact that it has now made people aware of texture sharing.

Edit

shyguy we must have been posting at the same time lol

Well, the first time i mentioned file sizes of the scenery packs I got blown off. That was months ago, glad trying again to mention it got results this time. I know creating 3d images and texturing it is no picnic (I use to do 2d textures including perfect repeating pics for walls in the older games). I still have some of my older software to "optimize" on the fly textures to view the best result in compression/palettes. I even have some of the old textures files i used on a cd.
I am always a little "rough" speaking. I am usually blunt and to the point. I'm not trying to criticize as I said before. I really like the look of the set, like to have the new optimize sets of it when they are done.

After reading all of this, perhaps a good idea might be to create a locked thread that only current modders can use: where information about custom scenery creation can be shared without other members jumping in and filling up the thread.

I don't know if this new board can handle it but I know my board can by creating different classes of users. Perhaps there is a way that the mods here can set up something similar? Something where we can all see the threads but only the modder's can reply? Just a thought

Back on topic, ShyGuy- this is a fabulous set and even with the large file sizes, a small building is still very useful and fun to have!

This idea is good on one hand, not so good on the other: It is correct, that some of this threads run out of the topic and for that reason it would be good to have a locked thread. Otherwise any creator would have feedback for his work. And how should I give feedback, when i can't post inside the thread. So you will have for any new scnery topic another topic for the feedback too. It would be more useful to have a better organized structure inside this forum with boards for requests, scenery in progress and released scenery.

BTW: Sorry Shyguy ... I have also miss the topic  . In that way Vodhin's idea is somethin' to think about

I was thinking about a new thread for modders to compile and post their knowledge- not just one thread about one set, but a pool of information and Q&A by those who are discovering how RCT3 works- readable by all, but only members with, say, released scenery or something, can post to. Other members can post their own questions in their own thread and this one can be a reference for all- a one stop thread for what's been discovered.

Main Street pack 1 and 2 have to be the two most awesome custom scenery packs I have seen to date. Not only are they perfect for main street (duh), but most pieces are a dead ringer for the building styles in NOS at Disneyland (the original). Whoops. I had no intention of showing any images or promoting any buildings or what not. Sorry. I only mentioned them as evidence that the scenery pack extends "visually" beyond the authors original intent, and wished to pay a compliment. I have no intention of hijacking this or anyone elses thread, so you needn't worry. :)

First off, my MANY thanks to shyguy for the best custom RCT3 sets on the net!! Now onto my many thoughs spurred by the discussion in this thread...

do you have any other mirror link? cos i couldn't get it from rapidshare anymore... even rapidshare told me they are blocked me out for while since i'm trying to hack it to switch the queue time and IP block off for my computer...You are trying to HACK rapidshare?!? You are a hero to many of us! But no wonder they blocked you! ;)

...if Frontier would just help with custom objects there wouldn't be most of these problems.Sometimes I think the guys who worked on this stuff in RCT3 are reading this and laughing at us as we learn how they did what they did...

I was thinking about a new thread for modders to compile and post their knowledge- not just one thread about one set, but a pool of information and Q&A by those who are discovering how RCT3 works- readable by all, but only members with, say, released scenery or something, can post to. Other members can post their own questions in their own thread and this one can be a reference for all- a one stop thread for what's been discovered.Vodhin, I think your idea for this thread is a good one, but what if there are peeps with helpful info that dont have posting rights. I know that statistically speaking, there would be very few people that fit into that category, but there would still be some, and they would need a way to add their thoughts to the data pool.

#1 is the regular small awning that fits the new window.
#2 will be labeled "wall offset" (not slight offset) which will fit a wall that has been turned frontwards.
#3 is the double awning that fits the double window from the first set.
#4 is the raised awning that fits the original window in the first set.Did you make an awning that is offset like #2, but fits the old windows like #'s 3 & 4?

Well, there's just so many variations I can make of each object before things get way too confusing. The wall offset awning is kind of an emergency awning in case you REALLY need to invert a wall and place an awning on it. I did that with one building in my Main Street park, and realized I probably shouldn't have done this.

For the majority of the pieces that I will design for upcoming sets, they will be made in one of 2 ways. Either to go in front of a wall that has been placed on the far side of the grid line, or to "straddle" the wall, so to be seen on both sides, like windows and some moulding pieces.

You can also expect a LOT more awnings and windows in various offset postions in the next set.

This looks professional. If I were Atari, I would hire you.

You should get both packs. They work together, as there are some pieces in #2 that look like they should be in #1. Oh, and #1 has all of the plain walls, so that would be kind of important.
